Most people eat only the flesh of an apple and throw away the core, but new reporting from Verywell Health says that part of the fruit actually holds a large share of its beneficial compounds.
According to Verywell Health, the core contains the highest concentration of probiotics in the apple, the microorganisms that support gut health. Research into apple microbiota cited by the outlet found that different parts of the fruit host different communities of microorganisms, and a healthy microbiome has also been linked in some studies to heart and mental health.
Pectin and antioxidants
The core is also rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria, aids digestion, supports regular bowel function, helps people feel full longer and may help keep blood sugar stable. Pectin has also been shown in studies to reduce inflammation in the gut and support immunity.
Apples generally are rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids, polyphenols and vitamins C and E, and Verywell Health says these are most concentrated in the core.
Who should avoid the core
The outlet notes the core is tough, so young children, people with swallowing difficulties and those who struggle to chew hard food should avoid it, as should people with an apple allergy. Anyone taking antihistamines, blood pressure medication or certain asthma drugs should check with a doctor first.
On the seeds, experts advise against eating them because they contain amygdalin, which can release small amounts of cyanide during chewing and digestion. One or two seeds carry too little to harm a healthy person, but experts still recommend removing seeds before eating the core.
