Argentine dancers Nicolás Schell and Nair Schinca have won the stage tango category at the Tango BA World Championship in Buenos Aires.
The pair, representing the city of Merlo in Buenos Aires province, claimed top honors on Wednesday night after prevailing over 19 other finalist couples in the grand final held at the Gran Rex theater.
Speaking after receiving the award, Schell said that they were happy and overwhelmed by their triumph.
The victory marks a career milestone for Schell and Schinca, who are established dancers and choreographers in the tango community. The duo have performed as part of prominent Buenos Aires tango companies since 2010 and have completed international tours around the world. They previously finished as runners-up in the stage tango category at the 2013 world championship in Buenos Aires.
Dramatics and technical virtuosity
Stage tango, known in Spanish as tango de escenario, is a competitive discipline that combines technical virtuosity with elaborate choreographic routines. Unlike traditional social tango, the stage category allows dancers to incorporate aerial maneuvers, rapid footwork, and dramatic theatrical choreography intended for stage performance.
The stage tango final was contested by 20 couples at the Gran Rex theater in central Buenos Aires. The venue, situated on the capital's historic Corrientes Avenue, is one of the city's most prominent performance spaces and traditionally hosts the championship finals.
Tango originated during the late 19th century in the working-class neighborhoods along the River Plate between Argentina and Uruguay. Over the decades, it evolved from a popular social dance into an internationally celebrated art form, with Buenos Aires remaining the global center of tango culture.
Salon and senior category results
The stage tango final concluded the multi-category 2026 Tango BA World Championship. On Tuesday, Greek dancer Naima Gerasopoulo and Argentine dancer Lucas Gauto won the salon tango title, known as tango de pista, which focuses on the classic style of social tango dancing.
In the senior salon tango division, reserved for dancers over the age of 55, Aldo Adrián Romero and Marcela Pilatti of Buenos Aires took first place.
Approximately 800 couples from 47 countries entered the various categories of this year's championship, which is organized by the Buenos Aires Ministry of Culture. The competition serves as the flagship event of the annual Tango BA Festival, which ran from August 19 until Wednesday and featured around 2,000 performing artists across the city.
