Ariana Grande releases her eighth studio album Petal

American singer Ariana Grande released her eighth studio album, Petal, on Friday, July 31, 2026, delivering a 12-track collection that has earned widespread acclaim from music critics for its raw energy and emotional strength.

Co-written by Grande alongside Swedish-Iranian producer Ilya Salmanzadeh, with contributions from hitmaker Max Martin on three tracks, the release marks a bold new musical phase for the artist as she responds to recent tabloid scrutiny surrounding her personal life.

Music publications quickly praised the new record following its Friday launch. Billboard noted that Grande allows her most authentic and furious self to bloom throughout the album, while Rolling Stone reported that the singer is consistently at her best when in a bad mood, adding that she does not hold back on Petal as she uses controversy surrounding her romantic relationships as fuel for her art. Variety described the record as a darker, more melancholic, and far more direct version of her 2024 album, Eternal Sunshine.

Behind the album creation

In an interview with Apple Music earlier in the week, Grande explained that fans would feel a sense of familiarity when listening to the new project while also discovering a style that is highly experimental and different.

She said she wrote the album from a place of unfiltered rage that she rarely draws from, admitting that she is usually too shy to connect with such feelings and chose not to apply as many creative filters as she usually does.

The album features direct lyrical statements across several tracks. On the song Oh Well, she sings that the bad guys can go to hell. On the title track Petal, she sings that although all her favorite stories end in some kind of catastrophe, she does not need anyone to save her because her music and she will never die.

Grande had previously previewed the project on social media, posting audio fragments of Oh Well and Freak on Instagram, and performed the title track live for the first time during a concert in Montreal. The official record label announcement from Universal Music confirmed the album details after Grande first announced in April that she was entering a new musical phase.

The album was preceded in June by the advance single Hate That You Made Your Love Me, which immediately debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Touring commitments and screen success

The arrival of Petal coincides with Grande's current world tour, The Eternal Sunshine Tour, which represents her first concert tour in over seven years since her 2019 tour promoting the albums Sweetener and Thank U, Next.

The sold-out tour includes 30 dates in the United States, beginning in Oakland with three shows held between June 6 and June 10, and concluding on August 6 in Chicago. Following her American dates, Grande will travel to Europe for a single city stop in London, where she will perform ten concerts between August 15 and September 1.

Between her previous album and Petal, Grande focused heavily on her acting career, starring as Glinda in the cinematic adaptation of the musical Wicked. The first installment was released in theaters in 2024 and earned 10 Oscar nominations, including a best supporting actress nod for Grande.

Her performance of the song Defying Gravity alongside co-star Cynthia Erivo earned the pair a Grammy Award for best pop duo or group performance. The award marked Grande's third career Grammy, following her 2019 win for best pop vocal album for Sweetener and her 2021 best pop duo or group performance win with Lady Gaga for Rain On Me.
