Asian elephants are capable of suppressing their impulsive reactions to solve problems more effectively, according to researchers who tested the animals at the National Elephant Institute in Thailand.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS One and reported by The Independent, reveals that Asian elephants belong to a relatively small group of animal species known to possess this cognitive skill.

Inhibitory control, defined as the ability to suppress an immediate impulse in favor of a more effective behavior, represents a fundamental component of decision-making in humans. Beyond humans, only a limited number of bird and mammal species have demonstrated similar executive control in laboratory tests.

Asian elephants are widely recognized for their advanced cognitive capabilities, including strong spatial memory and complex social structures. The National Elephant Institute, located in Thailand, conducts scientific research and conservation work focused on Asian elephant health and behavior.

Testing elephant self control

To evaluate whether elephants possess inhibitory control, researchers conducted a series of experiments involving 16 Asian elephants. The animals were initially trained to reach their trunks around a box to retrieve food through a single side opening.

Researchers then presented the elephants with a transparent box featuring small openings on the front surface. Through these front holes, the elephants could easily see and smell the food contained inside the box.

Despite the strong temptation to reach directly through the front holes, the elephants consistently resisted the urge. Instead of acting on impulse, they navigated around the front and used the opening on the side of the box to retrieve the food as previously learned.

Adapting to changing obstacles

The experiment became more challenging when researchers rotated the box to test how the elephants adapted to new conditions. When the position of the box shifted, the elephants initially gave in to impulse and attempted to reach for the food where the opening had previously been located.

However, the animals quickly altered their behavior and identified a new effective method to access the food. Researchers observed that older elephants in the study group adapted to the structural change more slowly, suggesting that age-related cognitive decline may affect response flexibility in older animals.

Scientists noted that the study provides some of the first empirical evidence of inhibitory control in Asian elephants, although they emphasized that further research is necessary to confirm and expand upon the findings. The experiment demonstrated that elephants can abandon an impulsive but ineffective action in favor of an indirect strategy that achieves the desired goal.

Applications for wildlife conservation

Researchers suggested that inhibitory control plays a vital role in the daily problem-solving abilities and social interactions of elephants. Understanding these cognitive processes could also support the development of more effective strategies to reduce conflict between human populations and wild elephants.

Human-elephant conflict remains a major conservation challenge across Asia as human settlements and agricultural lands encroach on traditional elephant habitats and migratory routes.

Researchers stated that learning how elephants interact with obstacles and navigate around them in controlled experiments provides valuable insight into how wild elephants avoid or bypass human-made barriers in natural environments.
