Athens Stock Exchange hits 17-year high in 24% rally

The Athens Stock Exchange reached a 17-year high on Monday, August 17, 2026, as buyers drove the General Index up 0.25 percent.

The benchmark index closed at 2,629.88 points, which represented its highest level of the trading session. The market recovered after an initial sluggish start brought the index down to a session low of 2,603.81 points, nearly breaching the key 2,600 threshold.

Monday's gain of 6.63 points lifted the Greek equity market to price levels not seen since November 2009. The Athens market has gained 2.34 percent during August 2026 and is running at a 24.01 percent advance year to date.

Traders set the next technical target range between 2,640 and 2,650 points. Selective buying and cyclical rotation across equity sectors absorbed short term profit-taking pressure throughout the day.

Banking and energy shares lead the market

The banking sector remained the principal driver of the market's upward momentum on the bourses. Piraeus Bank, one of Greece's four systemic financial institutions, returned above 10 euros per share to reach its highest level since March 2021.

Energy stocks also attracted strong investor demand, forming a second major pillar of trading activity. Refining companies extended their recent multi-year highs across the board.

Motor Oil Hellas, a major Greek petroleum refiner operating near Athens, touched 56 euros per share to set a new all-time high. Upward momentum in refining equities previously served as a buffer against profit taking in earlier trading sessions.

Motor Oil is scheduled to report its financial results for the first half of 2026 on Wednesday, August 26. Fellow fuel refiner HELLENiQ ENERGY, formerly known as Hellenic Petroleum, closed at a new 26-year high, reaching levels last seen in January 2000.

Individual stock gains and corporate actions

Outside of banks and refiners, lottery operator Allwyn and real estate firm Lamda Development posted strong gains on the trading floor. Lamda Development oversees large urban development projects in Greece, while Allwyn holds major interests in national gaming networks.

Gaming supplier Bally's Intralot released its first half financial results prior to the opening bell on Monday. The group reported first half revenue of 544.2 million euros and adjusted EBITDA of 184.8 million euros.

IT services provider Real Consulting traded ex-dividend on Monday without the right to a gross dividend of 0.10 euros per share, or a net amount of 0.095 euros per share. Dividend payments to eligible shareholders are scheduled for August 24.

Global market backdrop and monetary trends

The gains in Athens unfolded alongside mixed trading on international stock exchanges. Subdued retail sales data in the United States, combined with a steady decline in inflation, tempered investor expectations regarding future interest rate increases by the Federal Reserve.

The Federal Reserve serves as the central bank of the United States, where interest rate decisions influence global capital flows and risk sentiment across emerging and developed equity markets alike.

Market upgrade timeline and FTSE index review

Market participants are turning their attention to upcoming index rebalancing events scheduled for late summer and autumn. FTSE Russell, a global index provider owned by the London Stock Exchange Group, will announce its latest semi-annual index review under emerging market status on Friday, August 21.

The review announcement is expected to generate a substantial surge in trading activity during market closing auctions. FTSE Russell has set September 21, 2026, as the official effective date for upgrading the Greek market to developed market status.

Investment portfolio rebalancing flows associated with the market status upgrade are expected to finish at the close of trading on Friday, September 18.
