Babenhausen high-rise residents to return after 16 months

Residents of an evacuated high-rise building in Babenhausen will be allowed to move back into their apartments at the end of October 2026. The building in the Erloch area of Babenhausen, located in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, was cleared 16 months ago after large sections of the facade collapsed in late May of last year, exposing major structural faults.

Holger Gröning, a spokesman for the housing association, said work on the crumbling facade, fire protection systems, and lightning protection was nearly finished. Tenants had previously been permitted back inside only once briefly to collect their possessions, and it remains uncertain how many former occupants plan to return.

In Frankfurt, public health officials continue to investigate three deaths caused by malaria. A total of eight people contracted the disease over the summer, including six employees at Frankfurt Airport and two residents of the nearby Schwanheim district. The Frankfurt Health Department confirmed that laboratory tests to determine whether the cases are linked remain underway, though authorities still suspect airport malaria.

Frankfurt cold case and book fair opening

Frankfurt prosecutors have reopened a 30-year-old cold case involving the murder of a Frankfurt-born restaurateur on Mallorca. The crime will feature on the ZDF television programme Aktenzeichen XY on Wednesday evening. Manfred Meisel, the 49-year-old owner of the Bierkönig venue, was shot dead alongside his eight-year-old son Patrick and employee Claudia Leisten at a finca near S'Aranjassa on 12 November 1997. Prosecutor Dominik Mies said numerous witnesses had been interviewed and leads pursued over the years, though all had collapsed, adding that investigators are examining a potential link to a parrot mafia.

Cultural conflicts also surfaced at the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair on Tuesday evening, where the Czech Republic is participating as this year's guest of honour. Czech Culture Minister Oto Klempíř, representing the far-right Motorists party, faced repeated shouts of shame from the audience during his speech. Radovan Auer, director of the Prague Book Fair, displayed a protest sign targeting the minister. Keynote speaker and Czech author Radka Denemarková received a standing ovation after remarking that state ministers who destroy culture come and go, but literature remains.

Czech cultural presence and October 7 anniversaries

The Czech Republic's guest pavilion features an installation titled A Country on the Coast, designed by Prague architects using inflatable pebbles and artificial sea air. The concept draws on literary references to coastlines by William Shakespeare and Ingeborg Bachmann. Reader Bianca Bügler noted that the theme has a historical basis in Hamburg Port, where the Moldauhafen area was leased to Czechoslovakia for 99 years under the 1929 Treaty of Versailles to provide landlocked trade access. The lease expires in 2028, when the site is scheduled for residential redevelopment. Public celebrations of Czech culture also included an interactive survey on national dishes such as palačinky, goulash with dumplings, and trdelník.

In Frankfurt, public gatherings are taking place to mark the third anniversary of the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which killed nearly 1,200 people and injured thousands. The Alliance Against Antisemitism called a silent march starting at 5:00 pm from the Alte Oper to the Westend Synagogue to express solidarity with Israel and Jewish life. A separate pro-Palestinian demonstration starting at the Hauptwache and marching through the Bahnhofsviertel was also organized to commemorate victims of the subsequent war in Gaza.

Industrial accidents and road collisions in Hesse

Emergency services responded to several major incidents across Hesse on Tuesday. In Langen, in the Offenbach district, a 41-year-old construction worker suffered life-threatening injuries on Tuesday when a steel girder attached to a crane fell on him at a building site. Police reported that the man was rushed to hospital.

On the A5 motorway in the Wetterau district, a speeding driver caused a multi-vehicle crash overnight between Ober-Mörlen and Friedberg. Witnesses reported the car making frequent lane changes and driving along the hard shoulder before clipping a box van. The collision sent the van crashing into a preceding lorry. Firefighters from Bad Nauheim freed the van driver from the wreckage, and both drivers were hospitalised. Police are investigating the motorist, who also touched a motorhome near Bad Nauheim minutes earlier without causing injuries.

In Pfungstadt, located in Darmstadt-Dieburg, a small car crashed head-on into a large orange street sweeper near a roundabout on Tuesday. The impact ripped off a front wheel of the car. Police stated that the two car occupants, aged 26 and 69, suffered minor injuries, and both vehicles sustained heavy damage.

Police assaults and municipal decisions

Police in Melsungen, in the Schwalm-Eder district, arrested a 30-year-old man who injured five officers during a patrol check. Passers-by had spotted the intoxicated man in bushes near the train station, where he was insulting passers-by. Police reported that the suspect became violent when approached, kicking, scratching, and issuing death threats until a second patrol assisted in restraining him.

In Darmstadt, municipal authorities decided to move the children's playground in the Herrngarten park roughly 300 metres to the east following recurring conflicts connected to the local drug scene.

Rail infrastructure work will disrupt traffic in Alheim-Baumbach in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district overnight. The level crossing between Baumbach and Hergershausen will close completely from 10:00 pm until 6:00 am for track bed compaction following major works earlier this year. The district stated that local diversions via Rotenburg, Braach, Heinebach, and Niederellenbach would not be signposted due to low expected traffic volumes.

Infrastructure typos, sports and autumnal weather

Drivers traveling along the A7 motorway in Lower Saxony encountered a spelling error on new traffic signs directing motorists toward Bad Sooden-Allendorf in North Hesse. The newly installed signs omit the second O, reading Bad Soden-Allendorf. Correct signposts resume immediately after crossing the state border into Witzenhausen in Hesse. Hesse contains distinct municipalities named Bad Soden-Salmünster and Bad Soden.

Wildlife observers across Hesse are monitoring the autumn migration of thousands of cranes flying south. The conservation organisation NABU expects up to 250,000 birds to cross the state and has urged the public to report sightings online. In Baunatal, reader Benjamin Lawerenz captured a photograph of a buzzard emerging from morning fog.

Educational initiatives in Hersfeld-Rotenburg include four-hour Parents-LAN gaming sessions organised with the Brüder-Grimm-School in Bebra to help adults understand children's video games, with registration open until Monday. In youth athletics, 16-year-old boxer Joline Herzog from Hessisch Lichtenau is competing at the U17 European Championships in Budva, Montenegro, noting that boxing saved her life. Reporters Mark Weidenfeller and Daniel Schmitt also launched a new interactive Eintracht Frankfurt coverage format ahead of the upcoming match against Leipzig.

Hesse is experiencing a final day of late summer weather on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching 21 to 25 degrees Celsius after morning fog dissipates. Clouds will increase late in the afternoon, bringing scattered rain to western areas late in the evening and widespread rainfall overnight. Temperatures on Thursday will drop significantly to maximums between 12 and 17 degrees Celsius.
