Dominican movie theatres are debuting five new films this week, led by the historical drama Bajo el mismo sol directed by Ulises Porra.
The joint production between the Dominican Republic, Spain, and Argentina arrives in local theatrical listings following screenings at international film festivals in Canada and Santo Domingo.

Set in 1819 on the island of Hispaniola, the film centers on Lázaro, a young Spaniard who inherits the responsibility of building a silk factory. To carry out the venture, he partners with Mei, a descendant of a Chinese silk-producing family, and Baptiste, a deserter from the Haitian army.
The production makes its commercial debut in the Dominican Republic after participating in the Toronto International Film Festival and the Fine Arts Hecho en RD Film Festival. The narrative explores the intersection of different cultures during a tumultuous period in Caribbean history.
Retellings of Robin Hood and romantic drama
Also opening in Dominican cinemas is The Death of Robin Hood, starring Australian actor Hugh Jackman. The film revisits the legendary outlaw in his later years as he copes with a life marked by violence. After suffering a severe injury, he comes under the care of Sister Brigid and begins to question his past decisions while seeking redemption.
Audiences interested in romance have access to One Night Only, starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner. The plot follows Allie and Owen, two strangers who meet in a slightly fictionalized version of New York City where a unique law permits single people to engage in sexual relations on only one night per year.
The weekly releases also include the comedy Spa Weekend, which examines the dynamics of female friendship. The storyline focuses on three friends who travel to a spa for a quiet weekend, only for their trip to dissolve into chaos when a fourth group member known for her energetic party lifestyle joins them unexpectedly.
Supernatural horror franchise expands with Insidious sequel
For fans of horror, the weekly movie roster includes Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth entry in the supernatural movie series. The story centers on Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house where she spent her own childhood.
Her routine is upended when she discovers that she can travel to the Further, an eerie realm of lost souls that serves as the central element of the horror franchise.
The five new feature films offer moviegoers across the Dominican Republic a broad selection of genres, ranging from nineteenth-century historical drama to contemporary comedy and supernatural suspense.
