Russian swimmer Bogdan Toropkin has won the gold medal in the men's 200-metre freestyle at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

The 17-year-old clocked a winning time of 1 minute 47.78 seconds to secure first place, according to a report from Russian sports newspaper Sovetsky Sport.
Oliver Papai of Hungary claimed the silver medal with a time of 1 minute 48.43 seconds, finishing 0.65 seconds behind the winner. Daniel Saborio Grillo of Mexico took the bronze medal after touching the wall in 1 minute 49.68 seconds.
The victory is Toropkin's second gold medal of the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal. The Russian teenager had already won the men's 100-metre freestyle earlier in the tournament, and he also took a silver medal in the men's 400-metre freestyle.
Freestyle swimming competition
Toropkin's results span three distinct racing distances in the pool. The 100-metre freestyle is swimming's premier sprint event, while the 400 metres is an endurance race covering eight laps of the pool, making podium finishes across both disciplines a notable test of range.
In competitive swimming, freestyle races allow athletes to use any stroke, though competitors universally choose the front crawl because it is the fastest technique in the water.
The 200-metre distance is contested over four lengths of a standard 50-metre Olympic-sized pool. The race requires swimmers to balance early sprinting speed with aerobic stamina, challenging them to pace the opening two lengths before fighting through fatigue on the return stretch to the wall.
Historic Games in Senegal
The Youth Olympic Games are an international multi-sport competition organised by the International Olympic Committee for athletes aged 14 to 18. Established in 2010, the event provides emerging junior athletes with the experience of a global Olympic tournament, complete with an athletes' village, formal ceremonies, and Olympic-level competition.
Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is located on the Cap-Vert peninsula on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. The 2026 Games mark the first time that an Olympic event of any classification has been hosted on the African continent, bringing together thousands of young competitors across two weeks of sporting events.
The tournament results were reported by Sovetsky Sport, a national daily sports newspaper founded in Moscow in 1924, making it one of the longest-running sports publications in Russia.
The Youth Olympic Games in Dakar opened on October 31 and will run through November 13, 2026.
