Braskem Idesa files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in US

Mexico-based petrochemical producer Braskem Idesa filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a United States court on Tuesday to restructure its balance sheet and lower its debt burden.

The company announced that the court-supervised reorganization will not disrupt its ongoing business operations. It stated that it aims to finalize the entire restructuring process within 60 to 90 days.

Under the proposed restructuring plan, Braskem Idesa intends to cut its total debt from approximately $2.5 billion down to $1.6 billion. As part of the financial arrangement, parent company Braskem will inject $476 million in fresh capital into the venture and retain its majority ownership stake.

Braskem Idesa was established in 2016 as a joint venture combining the operations of Brazilian petrochemical company Braskem and Mexican industrial group Idesa. The entity operates a major petrochemical production complex located in the state of Veracruz, Mexico.

Debt reorganization and operational impact

Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection is a legal mechanism under United States law that permits debt-laden corporations to reorganize their financial obligations under court supervision. Unlike liquidation proceedings, Chapter 11 allows a business to continue standard commercial activities and manage day-to-day operations while negotiating repayment terms with creditors.

The joint venture's principal manufacturing plant is situated in Veracruz, a coastal state on the Gulf of Mexico that serves as a primary industrial hub for the regional energy and chemical sectors. Petrochemical facilities process chemical feedstocks into essential materials used across plastic manufacturing, consumer packaging, and automotive supply chains.

Braskem, based in Brazil, is the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, while Idesa is a major chemical manufacturing enterprise in Mexico.

Braskem Idesa reported that the financial reorganization will establish a sustainable capital structure for its future operations. The company expects to exit the court-supervised Chapter 11 process before the end of the year.
