Carlos Alcaraz confirms US Open return after wrist injury

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has announced he will return to competitive tennis at the upcoming US Open in New York, ending a four-month absence caused by a right wrist injury.

The 23-year-old confirmed his comeback on Thursday in a joint Instagram post with Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, who specializes in football transfers, revealing that he is ready to compete again in the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.

Using Romano's signature catchphrase "Here we go!", the post stated that Alcaraz would return to the tour for the tournament at Flushing Meadows after four months sidelined with the wrist issue, confirming he was ready for his comeback.

Alcaraz has been one of the unluckiest players in men's tennis during the 2026 season. Although he started the year with title victories at both the Australian Open and in Doha, his campaign was interrupted in mid-April when he suffered a right wrist injury during the Barcelona Open.

The injury proved far more serious than initially expected. Shortly after suffering the damage, Alcaraz withdrew from the Italian Open in Rome and Roland Garros in Paris, and he subsequently missed Wimbledon in London as his recovery dragged on.

Coach assessment and physical form

Despite Alcaraz remaining off the tour for an extended period, famous American tennis coach Rock Macci provided an encouraging update regarding his condition in July.

Reporting on social media platform X, Macci stated that Alcaraz's wrist was 100 percent fit and that the Spaniard had already played numerous practice matches and training sessions with other professional players. Macci added that Alcaraz had turned a negative situation into a positive one and that his overall physical form was even better than before the injury.

Title defense at Flushing Meadows

Alcaraz now returns to New York with the opportunity to defend his US Open title. In last year's final, he defeated Italy's Jannik Sinner in four sets, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to lift the trophy.

Sinner is expected to be his main competitor once again during the tournament. Main draw action at the US Open starts on August 30, with the men's singles final scheduled for Sunday, September 13.
