A cafe owner in Castelo Branco must pay 165,000 euros to the family of a 77-year-old former emigrant who died in a cafe fall. The victim suffered the fatal accident in June 2022 after confusing a restroom door with an unlit basement entrance containing iron stairs.
The customer sustained a severe fall down the staircase inside the dark basement. Firefighter teams and INEM emergency services responded to the scene to assist the victim.
Court compensation ruling
A court ordered the cafe owner to compensate the victim's widow and three children. The total compensation amount was set at 165,000 euros, plus statutory default interest.
