Singer Cher has filed legal documents in Los Angeles opposing her son Elijah Blue Allman's wife, Marieangela King Allman, from being appointed his conservator.
The 80-year-old pop icon submitted the supplemental memorandum on August 28 in a Los Angeles court, arguing that 39-year-old King Allman is attempting to re-enter her 50-year-old husband's life to control his income and seek publicity.
Cher, known globally for her decades-long music and film career, has been seeking legal intervention over the affairs of Elijah Blue Allman, her son with the late musician Gregg Allman. Under California and United States legal frameworks, a court-appointed conservatorship grants a designated guardian authority over an individual's financial estate or personal care when health or legal difficulties render them unable to manage independently.
Objections from family and medical authorities
In court documents obtained by People and submitted by Cher's attorney, Justin Gold, the singer stated that both New Hampshire State Hospital and the wider family remain firmly opposed to King Allman taking charge of the conservatorship.
The memorandum noted that King Allman had been alienated from Elijah Blue Allman through previously pending divorce proceedings. It further asserted that she refused and failed to assist her husband and an associate, Katie Peaze, when he encountered severe personal struggles prior to his arrest in New Hampshire.
According to the filing, Peaze had repeatedly and frequently requested assistance from King Allman to help care for Allman. The document stated that King Allman did not lift a finger to assist despite being his wife, and alleged that she now views the pending conservatorship as a financial opportunity to exploit his current detention.
Cher's legal counsel added that while any future relationship between Allman and King Allman remains his independent choice, her past indifference toward his health and living conditions over the preceding year makes her entirely unsuitable to serve as a court-appointed manager.
Hospital detention and alternative conservator proposals
Elijah Blue Allman is currently detained in a psychiatric hospital facility in New Hampshire, where he faces multiple criminal charges across two separate legal cases. He was previously arrested in March 2026 on charges including burglary and violation of release conditions.
The conservatorship process was officially initiated by New Hampshire State Hospital on July 7. In response, Cher requested that the court appoint Allman's half-siblings, Chaz Bono and Devon Allman, as co-conservators. Bono is Cher's child from her marriage to Sonny Bono, while Devon Allman is Elijah's half-brother through their father, Gregg Allman.
Court papers acknowledge an ongoing disagreement regarding who should manage the estate. King Allman submitted her own petition on August 18 seeking appointment as conservator. A court hearing was scheduled for September 1 to determine whether King Allman could or should assume the role.
However, Elijah Blue Allman failed to appear at the September 1 proceeding, leading the judge to postpone the hearing until December 1.
Response from Marieangela King Allman
In a statement provided to People, Marieangela King Allman defended her position, stating that as his wife of 13 years, she loves him and prioritizes his best interests. She emphasized that he requires a comprehensive, long-term treatment plan for sustained recovery.
King Allman added that her husband and his mother have been estranged for many years. She claimed that Cher has repeatedly obstructed her attempts to provide him with help and care.
She warned that allowing Cher to influence or control who becomes conservator would endanger her husband's prospects for a successful recovery.
Marriage history and previous court petitions
Elijah Blue Allman and Marieangela King Allman were married in 2013. King Allman first filed for divorce in 2021, but that petition was dismissed in February 2024.
She submitted a second divorce petition in April 2025, which was dismissed by the court in June 2026. Cher's filing highlighted that the couple had been engaged in divorce proceedings for many months and were already estranged when conservatorship actions began.
Cher previously petitioned for temporary conservatorship of her son's estate in December 2023, asking to be named sole conservator, before voluntarily withdrawing that request in September 2024.
The singer subsequently filed a second petition, arguing that Allman's condition had deteriorated significantly since her initial attempt. That petition was rejected by a Los Angeles judge in April.
In court filings from May 2026, Allman had stated that his mother stopped providing him with financial support years ago, leaving him reliant on the estate of his late father.
