Club Leo Lopez wins Night of Boxing Champions title

Club Leo "El Ciclon" Lopez won the team championship at the Night of Boxing Champions tournament in Puerto Plata, outpointing rival teams across 15 bouts.

The tournament took place at the Boxing Pavilion named after local ring hero Leo Lopez, who earned the nickname El Ciclon during his boxing career.

Pedrito Cid recorded the standout victory of the competition, delivering the only knockout of the card when he stopped Alvin Lopez in their 125-pound contest.

In the women's division, Ruth Garcia claimed a unanimous decision victory over Yissel Diaz, securing a clean 3-0 sweep from the ringside judges.

Participating clubs and tournament results

Three regional programs entered competitors in the tournament. Boxers representing Sosua-Montellano and Club La Chocolatera squared off against athletes from host squad Club Leo Lopez, whose fighters ultimately clinched the overall team title.

The event featured 15 individual bouts across multiple divisions. In competitive boxing, 125 pounds falls within the featherweight category, a division prized for fast exchanges. Knockouts are relatively uncommon in regional amateur bouts, making Cid's stoppage against Lopez the headline individual finish of the night.

Under standard amateur scoring rules, three judges evaluate every round based on clean punches, defense and overall ring control. Garcia earned the nod from all three officials to take a clear decision over Diaz in their female matchup.

Provincial boxing legacy

Puerto Plata province, situated along the northern Atlantic coast of the Dominican Republic, has a longstanding tradition of combat sports. Grassroots clubs like Club La Chocolatera and Club Leo Lopez serve as neighborhood training grounds, giving young boxers a pathway into provincial and national competitions.

The neighbouring communities of Sosua and Montellano share deep sports connections with Puerto Plata, frequently fielding combined teams for invitational events. Sosua, known internationally as a coastal resort, and Montellano, a historic sugarcane town, both maintain active amateur boxing gyms that regularly challenge clubs in the provincial capital.

Organisers said the victory reaffirms Club Leo Lopez at the top of boxing within the province. The result also strengthens the prestige of the municipal boxing pavilion, honouring Lopez as one of the most respected fighters in the sporting history of the Dominican north coast.

Tournament representatives Joan Glorioso and Jose Beard met with fighters, trainers and corner staff during the competition. The gathering brought together athletes, coaches and supporters from across the province to foster local sports development.
