Older adults who lead intellectually stimulating lives and develop strong emotional skills retain better memory and speech abilities after age 65, researchers reported.
Scientists analyzed the cognitive performance of individuals past age 65, focusing on cognitive reserve. This mental resilience is built across a lifetime through formal education, complex occupations, and activities that continuously challenge the mind and require new learning.

Participants who accumulated higher levels of cognitive reserve performed significantly better on vocabulary searches and other language tasks. On several specific testing indicators, the results of these older individuals approached those recorded in much younger participants.
Higher cognitive reserve was also associated with stronger working memory, which allows the brain to hold and manipulate information temporarily. In addition, participants with more developed emotional intelligence processed emotional information more effectively during testing.
Building cognitive reserve across a lifespan
Writing in the academic journals Neuropsychology and Brain Sciences, the study authors stated that the findings confirm the benefits of lifelong intellectual activity for preserving brain function in older age.
However, the researchers noted that their findings showed an association between accumulated cognitive reserve, emotional skills, and test scores. The studies did not prove that starting cognitive training after age 65 will on its own prevent age-related cognitive decline.
