Conmebol suspended two Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 first-leg matches scheduled this week in Colombia after a powerful earthquake struck the country on Monday.
The magnitude 7.4 quake was centered in western Colombia and was strongly felt in major cities including Bogota, Medellin and Cali, home to the country's leading clubs.
The suspension affects the Libertadores match between Deportes Tolima and Independiente del Valle, set for Tuesday in Ibague, and the Sudamericana match between Independiente Santa Fe and River Plate, set for Wednesday in Bogota.
Conmebol statement
Conmebol said that given the exceptional situation, and to preserve everyone's safety and respect for the victims, the matches were being temporarily suspended. It added that more information on rescheduling would be issued soon.
The decision follows the postponement of Colombia's first and second division matches scheduled for this week. Conmebol said the Independiente Santa Fe vs. River Plate match was suspended in solidarity with the Colombian people.
