Cyberattacks: How to Check if Your Data Has Been Hacked

Technology journalist Anicet Mbida has issued advice on French broadcaster TF1 explaining how members of the public can check whether cyberattacks compromised their personal passwords.

The guidance follows a wave of digital intrusions reported over recent weeks, which have raised concerns about the security of private online accounts across France. Mbida addressed the issue in a segment for the morning news program Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1, published online by TF1info on November 6, 2026.

In the 56-second broadcast, produced by the TF1info video editorial team, Mbida explained that internet users need clear methods to determine whether their personal data has fallen into the hands of hackers and whether their existing login credentials require immediate replacement.

Checking breached credentials

Data breaches typically occur when unauthorised actors penetrate commercial databases, web services, or retail networks to extract stored account records. Security specialists note that stolen databases frequently contain combinations of email addresses, usernames, and hashed or plain text passwords. Once exposed, these records are often shared or sold within illicit online forums.

When cyberattacks hit major online platforms, consumer credentials are frequently tested across multiple unrelated websites in automated attacks known as credential stuffing. Because many individuals reuse identical passwords for their email, banking, and shopping accounts, a single compromised service can leave dozens of independent personal profiles vulnerable to takeover.

Mbida pointed out that internet users can take direct steps to verify the safety of their login information. Major modern web browsers, including Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Mozilla Firefox, now incorporate built-in security auditing tools that cross-reference saved passwords against public databases of known data leaks, alerting users whenever a saved secret matches a compromised credential.

Steps to protect personal accounts

Independent verification platforms, such as the widely recognised Have I Been Pwned database, also permit individuals to enter their email addresses to see if their details appeared in previous corporate intrusions. These services do not collect or store user passwords during the check, making them a standard initial diagnostic tool recommended by digital security analysts.

Mbida is a well known technology and innovation journalist on French national television, regularly presenting educational segments designed to demystify complex digital topics for general viewers. His morning broadcasts on TF1 aim to help everyday consumers navigate evolving technology risks, from online scams to corporate network intrusions.

Cybersecurity agencies consistently urge consumers to update any password flagged as compromised and to avoid reusing passwords across multiple platforms. Experts recommend adopting dedicated password management software to create complex, unique passwords for every account, alongside enabling two-factor authentication to block unauthorized access even when a password has been leaked.
