A daily serving of plain yogurt costing just a few dollars may help slow or even reverse biological aging at the cellular level, a recent study found.
Probiotic yogurt is packed with live bacterial cultures that support gut health and may reduce inflammation. These benefits stem from interactions between probiotics and the gut microbiome, the community of microorganisms that plays a key role in overall health and longevity. Previous research has suggested that people with more diverse gut bacteria may have better metabolic health and immune function, both of which contribute to a longer lifespan.
In a comparison between a group that ate slightly less than half a cup of probiotic yogurt, received dietary advice, and exercised, and a group that made no diet or lifestyle changes, researchers found that the former's aging measures shifted by two percent. Researchers said that while it seems like a small percentage, it is the amount of change typically interpreted as a reversal in biological age, not just a pause.

The 12-week randomized controlled trial, published in the journal Aging, enrolled 48 overweight Japanese men aged 50 to 74. Participants were split into two groups: an intervention group that received daily dietary and exercise counseling plus 100 grams, or 0.4 cups, of plain yogurt containing the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium longum BB536, and a control group that maintained its usual habits.
Researchers collected blood samples at the start and end of the trial to measure aging biomarkers, including DunedinPACE, an epigenetic tool that tracks how quickly the body ages at the cellular level. The yogurt and lifestyle group showed a roughly 2.2 percent slowdown in their pace of biological aging over 12 weeks. Within the intervention group alone, the slowdown relative to baseline was statistically significant at 2.3 percent, while the control group's pace remained essentially unchanged.
Researchers noted that while the effect might sound small, it is comparable to results seen in longer, more intensive calorie-restriction studies, and it was achieved through manageable adjustments rather than extreme dieting.
The yogurt group also lost weight, but researchers said that alone did not explain the reversal of aging. Instead, they believe improvements in metabolic regulation, reduced inflammation, and better gut function likely played a role.
The study also found a notable drop in a DNA marker linked to kidney stress called DNAmCystatinC, which tends to rise when kidneys are under more strain. After 12 weeks, the intervention group's average sat around -2,500, compared with the control group's 7,500, a gap of roughly 10,000 units, while the control group showed no change.
The researchers were careful to note this was a small, short-term trial in middle-aged men, and said more research is needed to see if the changes stick or translate into longer, healthier lives.
How the probiotic may work
According to previous research, Bifidobacterium longum BB536 may help dial down systemic inflammation, a core hallmark of aging, through its effects on the gut. The strain produces beneficial byproducts, including a compound called indole-3-lactic acid, which may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, known drivers of cellular aging. The researchers suspect the drop in DNAmCystatinC could be linked to the probiotic's influence on gut-derived toxins such as indoxyl sulfate, which are hard on the kidneys.
Probiotic yogurt is often held up as the gold standard for gut health and is one of the most studied fermented foods. Unlike supplements, yogurt delivers beneficial bacteria in a food form that can improve their survival through the digestive tract. Specific strains, like BB536, have been linked to reduced inflammation, improved digestive function and enhanced immune response. Some research has also tied regular yogurt consumption to better metabolic health, including lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. It is believed these strains produce bioactive compounds, such as short-chain fatty acids and anti-inflammatory metabolites, that can influence the gut and the broader body, including the immune and nervous systems.
Yogurt can be eaten on its own or dressed up with toppings such as fresh berries, low-fat granola, or a drizzle of honey. It also works in smoothies, as a substitute for sour cream, or as a base for creamy dressings and dips, making it an easy food to incorporate into daily meals and snacks.
Caveats in the research
The science behind yogurt's benefits is not as solid as some marketing may suggest. Not all yogurts are created equal: different strains have different effects, and many commercial yogurts do not contain enough live bacteria to make a meaningful difference, or contain strains that have not been rigorously tested in humans.
Much of the research on yogurt and health is observational, meaning it can show a link between yogurt consumption and better health outcomes but cannot prove cause and effect. People who eat yogurt regularly often have other healthy habits, such as exercising more or eating a better overall diet, which makes it difficult to isolate yogurt's specific contribution. The researchers behind the latest trial cautioned that their findings are exploratory and need to be replicated in larger, longer studies.
