Damian Knyba, a 30-year-old Polish heavyweight boxer, delivered the biggest surprise of the night on Friday when he defeated Andy Ruiz Jr. by unanimous decision at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Knyba used his physical advantage over Ruiz to send the former unified heavyweight world champion to the canvas in the seventh round, according to DAZN, which broadcast the bout live worldwide as a pay-per-view event.
The fight was Ruiz's return to the ring after more than two years without a bout. It headlined a four-fight card that was also shown live by TNT Sports and ESPN.
Knyba floors Ruiz in round seven
Knyba leaned on his reach and size for much of the fight and used that edge to put Ruiz down in the seventh round. He went on to win every scorecard, handing Ruiz the loss by unanimous decision. The Prudential Center, an arena in Newark that regularly stages major boxing cards, hosted the fight.
Going into the bout, Knyba was looking to rebound from his first professional defeat and hoped a win over Ruiz would move him closer to a title opportunity in the heavyweight division.
Who is Andy Ruiz Jr.?
Ruiz is widely known for one of boxing's biggest upsets, when he stopped Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden in June 2019 to become a unified heavyweight world champion. Joshua reclaimed the titles in a rematch later that year in Saudi Arabia. Friday's fight in Newark marked Ruiz's first appearance in the ring in more than two years.
