Greek swimmer Dimitris Markos set a new Greek national record in the 200m freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Paris, clocking 1:44.93 during the leadoff leg of the men's 4x200m freestyle relay final.
The 25-year-old shattered his own previous record of 1:46.28, which he had set on 28 July 2025 at the World Championships in Singapore. The swim also made him the 11th Greek athlete to secure qualification for the 2027 World Championships. Report indicated that if Markos repeats a similar time in the individual 200m freestyle event, he looks capable of contending for a major medal in Paris.
Relay finishes eighth
Konstantinos Englezakis, Konstantinos Stamou and Andreas Vazaios swam the remaining legs but could not keep the Greek team near the front of a very fast field. Greece finished eighth overall but still set a national record of 7:08.15, improving on the 7:09.10 the same four swimmers had produced on 16 February 2024 at the World Championships in Doha.
Great Britain takes gold
Great Britain won the gold medal in a meet record of 7:01.52, with Richards, McMillan, Guy and Scott swimming the relay. France finished second in 7:02.23 with Léon Marchand leading off, alongside Larzeron, Kristofini and Fouks. Germany edged out Italy for bronze, touching in 7:02.28 with Mertens, Sorgius, Baschnit and Jan.
