Dr Jean-Marc Sene explained why standing up quickly causes sudden dizziness during an appearance on French morning television show Bonjour La Matinale TF1.
The physician detailed that postural lightheadedness occurs when gravity pulls blood downward toward the lower body, temporarily reducing blood flow to the brain before physiological self-regulation mechanisms kick in.
According to Sene, the human body relies on peripheral leg muscles contracting to push pooled blood back toward the upper body. At the same time, specialized pressure sensors located inside the carotid arteries measure arterial pressure.
When carotid sensors detect a sudden drop in pressure, a signal is sent instructing the heart to beat faster and raise cardiac output, while blood vessels constrict to maintain cerebral irrigation. Sene noted that this automated circulatory response is not instant and requires three to four seconds to take full effect.
During those few seconds of delayed adjustment, individuals may experience weak legs or ringing in their ears as blood flow stabilizes. TF1 is France's oldest and largest commercial television network, where morning health segments regularly address everyday medical concerns.
Triggers and medication risks
Sene explained that sensations of dizziness are noticeably more frequent during summer weather because high ambient temperatures cause blood vessels to dilate, encouraging blood to remain in the lower limbs. He added that mild dehydration, including the natural fluid loss experienced after sleeping through the night, decreases total blood volume and makes maintaining blood pressure more difficult.
Certain prescription drugs can also lower blood pressure and intensify postural symptoms. Sene highlighted blood pressure medications, diuretics, prostate treatments, and mood regulation therapies as common pharmaceutical factors that increase lightheadedness upon standing.
The doctor emphasized that in the vast majority of cases, the condition is completely benign, causing brief discomfort that resolves within seconds without needing medical intervention. However, he cautioned that patients should consult a physician if symptoms become very frequent, cause a fall, lead to a loss of consciousness, or begin immediately after starting a new medication.
Unexplained fainting or severe lightheadedness can sometimes indicate vasovagal syncope, a related condition where a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure reduces blood flow to the brain.
Simple physical techniques to prevent dizziness
To prevent lightheadedness when rising, Sene demonstrated two practical physical techniques. He advised people waking up in the morning to remain seated on the edge of the bed for 30 seconds to give the body adequate time to readapt to an upright position. While sitting, individuals should lift their feet up and down off the floor to stimulate leg circulation and push blood upward.
The second technique involves standing up, crossing the legs, and squeezing the leg muscles together tightly. Sene concluded that muscle activation forces pooled blood back up to the heart, noting that the maneuver is proven effective at preventing orthostatic hypotension.
Orthostatic hypotension, also known as postural hypotension, is a form of low blood pressure that happens when standing up from sitting or lying down. Health authorities recommend simple physical counter-pressure maneuvers, such as leg crossing and muscle tensing, as initial non-pharmacological steps to maintain cerebral blood flow.
