Doc Rivers questions Giannis Antetokounmpo basketball IQ

Doc Rivers questions Giannis Antetokounmpo basketball IQ

Former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers has criticised Giannis Antetokounmpo, stating the Greek star lacks a high basketball IQ.

Rivers, who is currently without a coaching role, described the two-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player as a difficult talent to manage during an appearance on a podcast hosted by Bill Simmons.

Reflecting on their time together in Milwaukee, the veteran tactician analysed specific areas of the forward's game and temperament that he believes require improvement.

Critique of playing pace and court awareness

Rivers said Antetokounmpo was not an easy player to coach. He explained that the Greek international plays at an extraordinarily fast pace, making him a truly demanding player to handle from the sidelines.

While the coach praised Antetokounmpo for possessing exceptional passing skill and playmaking vision, he argued that the forward does not have a particularly high basketball IQ.

Rivers added that Antetokounmpo essentially relies on only one way of playing the game. On every single play, Rivers said, the player seeks to impose whatever idea is already in his mind, rather than adapting to the situation.

The former coach stressed that he would like to see the superstar learn to execute better in structured offensive sets.

Partnership with the Milwaukee Bucks

The candid assessment follows Rivers' spell in charge of the Milwaukee Bucks, where he took over the locker room with the aim of contending for another championship. The veteran coach is currently unattached to any team after parting ways with the franchise.

Antetokounmpo, commonly known as the Greek Freak, has spent his entire North American career in Milwaukee after arriving as an unheralded teenager from Athens in the 2013 NBA draft. He developed into one of the most dominant forces in modern basketball, guiding the franchise to the 2021 NBA title, which ended Milwaukee's 50-year championship drought.

During that championship run, Antetokounmpo collected the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award after scoring 50 points in the decisive contest. He had previously captured consecutive league MVP trophies in 2019 and 2020, as well as the Defensive Player of the Year honour in 2020.

Tactical demands and half court execution

In professional basketball, basketball IQ refers to an athlete's court awareness, anticipation, and ability to read defensive coverages in split seconds. While Antetokounmpo is celebrated for his physical dominance and relentless transition attacks towards the rim, opposing coaches often design defensive walls in the half court to slow his momentum.

Rivers' comments point directly to that tactical dilemma. Coaches in the league often demand strict execution of offensive sets, requiring players to read help defenders, time their cuts, and distribute the ball when driving lanes close.

Throughout his career, Antetokounmpo has frequently drawn praise for generating open three-point shots for teammates through drive and kick sequences. However, Rivers argued that his single-minded offensive mentality can limit team fluidity when games slow down.

Decades on the sideline

Rivers brought extensive experience to Milwaukee, having coached in the league for more than two decades. He won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and also led the Orlando Magic, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Philadelphia 76ers during his long career.

His critical remarks were delivered on The Bill Simmons Podcast, one of the most prominent audio programmes in American sports media. Simmons, the founder of The Ringer, frequently hosts former coaches and analysts for unfiltered discussions on the sport.

Neither Antetokounmpo nor representatives for the Milwaukee Bucks have issued a public response to the remarks.
