Doctolib, the French healthcare booking platform used by 50 million people, launched an AI research program on August 1 that will draw on user data to develop artificial intelligence tools.
Founded in 2013, the company helps patients in France organise and book medical appointments. Doctolib said the goal of the program is to improve care pathways. Its AI system is set to have access to appointment bookings, consultation reasons, and practitioners' prescriptions.
Users who object can opt out by filling in a form and checking a box in an email the company sent. Doctolib is relying on a legal basis known as legitimate interest under European data protection rules, which permits data processing provided it does not create an imbalance that harms individuals' rights and interests.
Gabriela Belaid, a cybersecurity expert and president of CentraleSupelec au Feminin, warned that with artificial intelligence there are always risks linked to data theft and to the exploitation of that data.
