Doctor Myasnikov Warns Anemia May Signal Cancer in Women

General practitioner and television presenter Alexander Myasnikov has warned that iron deficiency anemia in elderly women can be a non-obvious sign of cancer. Speaking on the broadcast About the Most Important Thing on the Rossiya 1 television channel, Myasnikov stated that older women must not ignore low iron levels in their blood.

Myasnikov stated that iron deficiency anemia in older patients may point to serious gastrointestinal conditions, including stomach cancer, bowel cancer, or an ulcer. He urged women who display this symptom to undergo diagnostic procedures, specifically a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy, to determine the cause of the blood loss.

Diagnostic procedures and health risks

Iron deficiency anemia is a medical condition in which the body lacks adequate iron to produce hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to tissues. In older adults, chronic internal bleeding within the digestive tract is a primary cause of iron depletion, often stemming from ulcers or malignant tumors in the stomach and intestines.

To identify the source of potential internal bleeding, physicians use gastroscopy to inspect the upper digestive tract and stomach, while colonoscopy allows examination of the lower intestinal tract. The episode of About the Most Important Thing featuring Myasnikov's recommendations was made available online on the Smotrim video platform. Rossiya 1 is a major Russian state television network, and Smotrim serves as its digital streaming service.

Previous television commentary

Myasnikov is a prominent physician and media figure who regularly provides medical commentary on Russian national television. In an earlier broadcast of his program, the doctor discussed the health properties of beer, noting that the beverage contains group B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, and silicon, which support connective tissue health.

In another recent incident on About the Most Important Thing, Myasnikov made a public remark to a studio guest. Reports noted that the presenter was annoyed after the guest interrupted him while he was answering a medical question during the show.
