The American singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80 after a career spanning more than six decades.
Parton, who rose from humble origins in rural Tennessee to become a global cultural icon, transcended country music to achieve worldwide fame through her hit songs, screen performances and charity work.
Her global profile was cemented by enduring compositions such as Jolene and I Will Always Love You, alongside her international philanthropic efforts focused on early childhood literacy.
Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, she was raised in a low-income family in the Appalachian Mountains. She was the fourth of 12 children born to her parents.
Parton consistently maintained that the poverty of her childhood shaped both her character and her creative output. That experience was immortalised in her deeply personal composition Coat of Many Colors, which was inspired by a coat her mother made for her from scrap fabric.
Country music legend and songwriting career
After establishing herself on local radio and television broadcasts in Tennessee, Parton moved to Nashville immediately after graduating from high school. Nashville, widely recognized as the capital of country music, served as the launchpad for her national career.
She first achieved national fame performing alongside the singer and television host Porter Wagoner. Shortly afterwards, she launched a solo career that established her as one of the most successful recording artists in country music history.
Despite her fame as a performer, Parton insisted throughout her life that her greatest professional pride was being a songwriter. Over the course of her lifetime, she stated that she had written approximately 3,000 songs.

That same year, she wrote I Will Always Love You as a professional farewell to Wagoner. Business ventures and Dollywood theme park
Parton also demonstrated significant commercial acumen throughout her career. In 1985, she launched Dollywood, a theme park located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, near the Great Smoky Mountains.
Dollywood grew into one of the primary tourist destinations in the southeastern United States and became a major economic driver for the Great Smoky Mountains region. Parton subsequently expanded her business interests to include hotels, restaurants, production companies and other entertainment projects.
Philanthropy, literacy and medical research
Parton's most enduring legacy remained her work off the stage. In 1995, she created Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, an initiative that mails a free book every month to registered children from birth until the age of five. She was inspired to launch the charity by her father, who had never learned to read or write.
The program began in her home county in Tennessee before expanding across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland and other countries through local partnerships. In 2025, the organization reached the milestone of gifting 300 million books, establishing it as the world's largest early childhood book-gifting program.
Her philanthropic work also extended to public health during the Covid-19 pandemic. Parton donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville to fund research that contributed to the development of vaccines against the disease.
Throughout her career, Parton received multiple industry awards while maintaining an exceptionally positive public image.
