Dominican Power Distributors Lost 40.1% of Purchased Energy

Dominican electricity distribution companies lost 40.1% of all energy they purchased in the first four months of 2026, according to an April 2026 performance report from the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The figure means that for every 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) acquired by the Empresas Distribuidoras de Electricidad (EDE), 40.1 GWh ended up as losses, according to an analysis by the Centro Regional de Estrategias Económicas Sostenibles (CREES).

The losses break into two components. Between January and April 2026, the distributors purchased 6,087.4 GWh but billed only 3,829.8 GWh, leaving 2,257.6 GWh unbilled, equal to 37.1% of energy purchased.

Of the electricity that was billed, 182.0 GWh went uncollected, adding a further 3.0 percentage points. Together the two components produce the 40.1% total loss figure.

The rate marks a deterioration from the 39.1% recorded in the same period of 2025, a rise of one percentage point year on year. It also exceeds the 38.4% loss rate reported as of March 2026.

CREES noted that the methodology used to calculate EDE losses in this analysis differs from that applied in previous publications.
