British consumer technology company Dyson has launched its first dental care device, an artificial intelligence toothbrush called the Dyson CameraJet priced at £420.
The new toothbrush features a built-in camera with a 100k pixel macro lens that scans 28 live images per second to detect gaps between teeth and automatically trigger a jet of mouth rinse into hard-to-reach areas.
Dyson spent six years developing the device, deploying a team of 661 engineers to address toothbrushing habits and plaque removal. The company claims the CameraJet removes up to 69 per cent more plaque than market-leading premium electric toothbrushes.

Dyson, founded by engineer Sir James Dyson in 1991, is best known for high-end vacuum cleaners and has increasingly branched out into personal care products, launching hair dryers, hair straighteners, handheld fans, and air purifiers.

We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque and how to improve cleaning performance while brushing."
Sir James added: "By combining a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics, advanced brushing technologies, connectivity and wifi, Dyson CameraJet introduces an entirely new way to keep your mouth healthy."

Artificial intelligence camera and flossing system
While dentists recommend flossing on a daily basis, research shows that only 10 per cent of Britons do this in practice. Dyson designed the toothbrush, described as an entirely new way to clean your teeth, to tackle toothbrushing and flossing simultaneously in one device.
As a user brushes, the camera's 100k pixel macro lens scans 28 live images per second. When a gap is identified, a precision conical jet triggers almost immediately, within 0.1 seconds, spraying mouth rinse into the hole to clean hard-to-reach spots across the mouth.

Most traditional water flossers rely on needle-type jets, which struggle to budge stubborn plaque. Dyson explained that testing on proxy plaque demonstrated the limitations of conventional designs. "When tested on Dyson's proxy plaque, this type of jet pierced a hole through the plaque, but failed to overcome its stickiness and remove it all," the firm stated.
To overcome this issue, Dyson engineered a broader spray shape. "In contrast, Dyson's conical jet uses a unique broad conical shaped spray. Its wider coverage sweeps and removes plaque at once, while being optimised at a lower pressure to be gentler on gums and enamel," Dyson explained.

Anti-gravity fluid delivery and app features
The mouth rinse is housed inside an anti-gravity tank designed to deliver fluid continuously regardless of the angle at which the toothbrush is held. "Dyson's anti-gravity tank is engineered to eliminate air pockets and prevent the device from firing blanks," the company said. "This is especially important when cleaning the back of the teeth, where the device is often horizontal."
When the fluid supply runs low, the toothbrush automatically refills when placed onto its docking station, which also doubles as a charger.
The device features wifi connectivity at 2.4GHz as well as Bluetooth connectivity, pairing with the MyDyson mobile application. Users who choose the live-viewing option can watch a live stream of the inside of their mouth directly on their smartphone screen while brushing.
The MyDyson app also provides guided cleaning tutorials, how-to films, detailed brushing and flossing insights, coverage mapping, and personalized feedback.

Dual-bristle head and smart RFID tracking
For the brush head, Sir James Dyson selected a dual-bristle design incorporating two distinct bristle types. The inner bristles are slightly firmer to remove stains, while the outer bristles are soft to ensure they are not painful on the gums.
Smart tracking is built into each replacement head using Radio-Frequency Identification technology. "Each brush head is equipped with its own RFID tag, identifying when it is connected, how many cleans it has completed, and alerting users when it is time to replace. When a new brush head is attached, the cycle starts again," Dyson said.

Pricing, accessories, and store availability
The Dyson CameraJet carries a price tag of £419.99 (or £420). The standard purchase price includes the toothbrush, charging dock, travel case, a supply of Dyson Toothpaste, and Dyson Mouthrinse.
Dyson has also formulated its own non-foaming toothpaste and mouth rinse, priced at £8.49, which are available in two flavours: Ginger Mint and Spearmint.
Replacement brush heads cost £25 for a pack of two.
High pricing is a familiar strategy for the firm, coming after the launch of its £820 headphones equipped with an air purification system.
The toothbrush goes on sale today at selected retailers and official Dyson Demo Stores. It is available in two colourways, Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink.
