The Earl of Devon has married his girlfriend Jemima Hannon in an intimate ceremony at his ancestral seat, Powderham Castle in Devon, three years after his marriage to Baywatch actress Allison Joy "AJ" Langer broke down.
Lord Charles Courtenay, 51, married Jemima, 44, this summer at the Devon estate, less than six months after the couple announced their engagement in March.
The news was confirmed this weekend by the Powderham estate, which posted a photograph of the newlyweds on Instagram.
"We are pleased to announce that Charlie and Jemima Courtenay, the Earl and Countess of Devon, married this summer in an intimate ceremony at Powderham," the announcement read.
In the photograph, Jemima, now the Countess of Devon, wears a long floral dress as she links arms with Charles, who has his arm around her shoulders, in a field on the estate.
The couple announced their engagement in March, when a spokesman described Jemima as Charles's "wonderful girlfriend."
Who is Jemima Hannon?
Jemima is a graduate of Bristol University and a former three-day eventer. She met her previous husband, the leading racehorse trainer Richard Hannon, through her love of horses.
She later became an estate agent and co-founded a business that buys country houses for clients.
Richard Hannon has trained horses for high-profile owners including the former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Sheikh Fahad Al Thani of Qatar.
Jemima is the daughter of Peter Ensor and the Hon Sarah Campbell, and a granddaughter of the late Baron Campbell of Alloway.
Charles and Jemima both have two children from their previous marriages. Their engagement announcement made clear that uniting their families was part of their plans for the future.
Their spokesman said at the time: "Along with their four children, they are delighted to unite their families and look forward to the many joys ahead."
End of marriage to Baywatch star AJ Langer
The wedding comes three years after Charles's marriage to AJ, 52, broke down after 18 years.
AJ appeared in the second series of Baywatch and starred as Rayanne Graff in the acclaimed US drama My So-Called Life. She married Charles in 2005, after the pair met in Las Vegas while he was on a rugby tour.
The couple initially made their home in California before moving to Britain and into Powderham after Charles's father, Hugh Courtenay, the 18th Earl of Devon, died in 2015.
They had two children, Lady Joscelyn Courtenay, 19, and Jack Courtenay, Lord Courtenay, 17, but announced their separation in 2023.
AJ on adjusting to castle life
AJ had previously spoken about the difficulty of adjusting to her husband's aristocratic inheritance and life at the castle.
"I may have underestimated the realities for myself," she said. "It was the same for my husband, who had been my hippy, feminist husband in California for ten years. I was, like, Where did my hippy, feminist husband go? And all of a sudden these patriarchal things start coming out of his mouth. I'm, like, Who are you? Where's my Charlie? So it's a lot of recalibrating."
She also described the move to Britain as "like an anthropological study of the culture" and recalled the scale of her father-in-law's funeral at Powderham.
"It was like The Godfather, it was extraordinary," she said. "It was 800 people coming into the castle, and all lined up just to shake [the new Earl's] hand. I'd learnt a lot over the 12 years that we'd been together, but I think I'd underestimated the step. Here I was in the middle of a really intense, very, very deep-rooted patriarchy. And so it's been really fascinating."
New kitchen planned for Powderham
Charles and Jemima are now preparing to put their own stamp on Powderham as they begin married life.
Last week, the Daily Mail revealed that the estate is seeking permission to install a new bespoke domestic kitchen inside the Grade I-listed castle.
Plans submitted to Teignbridge Council would turn the existing private dining room, also known as the small dining room, into a kitchen with painted Shaker-style cabinetry, natural stone worktops and solid brass fittings.
The proposals say the room is intended to provide a functional domestic kitchen while respecting the historic significance of the castle, with no extension or external alterations planned.
The application remains awaiting a decision, with the council due to determine it by October 13.
Powderham sits beside a deer park on the banks of the River Exe. It has been the Courtenay family's ancestral home for centuries and remains both a private residence and a major Devon visitor attraction.
