Hellenic Red Cross volunteers revived a 50-year-old man twice after he lost consciousness and collapsed in the central square of Elassona.
Samaritan Rescuers from the Elassona Regional Division of the Hellenic Red Cross immediately rushed to the scene. The rescuers took control of the incident and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, successfully restoring the man's vital signs on two separate occasions before continuing first aid until an ambulance arrived to transport him to a hospital unit.
The collapse occurred while Red Cross volunteers were holding a canine first aid information event nearby. The public demonstration formed part of nationwide educational activities organized by the Hellenic Red Cross to mark International Dog Day, an annual observance dedicated to animal welfare and pet safety.
Elassona is a town and municipality in the Larissa regional unit of Thessaly, situated in central Greece at the foot of Mount Olympus. The Hellenic Red Cross, founded in 1877, is the country's largest humanitarian organisation. Its Samaritan Rescuers division operates as a specialized voluntary unit trained in emergency first aid, disaster relief, and outdoor rescue operations.
Volunteer describes emotional scene
A female Red Cross volunteer who participated in the emergency effort described the rescue as an unforgettable experience shared alongside her fellow volunteers. She said it marked the first time that everything learned during Red Cross training courses was put into practice, recalling the intense anxiety, fear, and hope during CPR before life was restored twice.
She recounted feeling pride, chills, joy, emotion, and many tears during the intervention, noting that the team did not feel like they were helping a stranger but rather holding the life of one of their own in their hands. The experience brought back memories of an incident four years earlier, when another person receiving their assistance referred to the volunteers as their angels.
The volunteer reflected that being present in someone's time of greatest need and stepping in as a protective figure for a few crucial minutes reflects the true meaning of the Red Cross. She added that she would cherish the memory forever and expressed deep pride in her role as a volunteer.
