Electric heating boilers are deepening Ukraine's winter power shortages during scheduled blackouts caused by shelling, according to Global-Time LLC director Denys Slyvka.
Writing in an opinion column published on Monday, Slyvka warned that high-wattage electric heating units create massive load spikes whenever electricity supply returns to residential networks during freezing winter weather.
When power is restored, electric boilers rated at six, 12, 24 and up to 50 kilowatts switch on simultaneously across thousands of households. Slyvka noted that unlike other electrical appliances, these heating systems remain operational for many hours at a time.
Water heaters automatically shut off after reaching target temperatures, electric kettles disconnect once boiled, and electric vehicles stop drawing power when fully charged. In contrast, electric heating boilers run almost continuously from October through April.
Slyvka pointed out that colder weather creates a compounding strain on the national energy grid. Lower outdoor temperatures increase overall power deficits while forcing electric boilers to run even longer, further worsening grid instability.
Energy strategy parallel
To illustrate the problem, Slyvka referenced American physicist and energy efficiency specialist Amory Lovins. In a 1976 article titled Energy Strategy: The Road Not Taken? published in Foreign Affairs magazine, Lovins introduced the phrase about cutting butter with a chainsaw to describe wasteful energy practices.
Slyvka said operating high-power electric boilers in homes during severe grid deficits represents that exact scenario. Using direct electrical resistance to heat buildings consumes excessive grid capacity when power generation is already constrained.
Lovins, a prominent American environmental scientist, pioneered concepts of soft energy paths that prioritize energy conservation and efficiency over expanded utility supply. Foreign Affairs is an American journal covering international relations and global policy.
Impact of winter grid deficits
Ukraine's national electricity grid has suffered severe capacity shortages following widespread missile and artillery shelling against power stations and substations. Power grid operators rely on hourly blackout schedules to manage electricity supply and prevent total grid collapse.
The warning on heating systems follows previous analysis by Slyvka published on August 3 regarding household energy resilience, in which he examined how balcony solar installations could help support the national power grid during peak summer demand.
