Trendy electrolyte drinks could be putting consumers at risk of high blood pressure and severe kidney damage due to their high sodium content, medical experts have warned.
The popular beverages, which have exploded in popularity across Britain as daily wellness supplements, often contain significant amounts of sodium, the primary constituent of dietary table salt. Health professionals warn that regular consumption can elevate blood pressure and progressively impair kidney function, posing an acute threat to millions of Britons living with undiagnosed cardiovascular or renal conditions.
A standard 500ml electrolyte drink typically contains about 320mg of sodium, equivalent to approximately 0.8g of salt. That amount is more than double the sodium found in a standard bag of ready-salted potato crisps. With average daily salt intake in Britain already standing at 8.4g, well above the recommended maximum limit of 6g, consuming a single electrolyte drink each day can push sodium consumption significantly higher.
Simon Davies, Emeritus Professor of Nephrology at Keele University in Staffordshire and a trustee of the charity Kidney Research UK, urged consumers to exercise restraint. "Just as people shouldn't have too much salt in their diet, I would advise caution with electrolyte drinks," Professor Davies said.
Professor Davies explained that consuming extra sodium every day can trigger a damaging physiological cycle. "The danger is that consuming a lot of extra sodium every day in a drink can increase blood pressure, which can then damage the kidneys," he stated. "Damaged kidneys are not as efficient at removing excess salt, so blood pressure rises even higher and the kidneys are damaged even further, and so on and so on, in a vicious circle."
He warned that renal damage often develops without clear warning signals. "What's worse is that people may not realise the damage has been done until the problems are already well advanced," Professor Davies said.
Kidney Research UK, founded in 1961, is the leading British charity dedicated to funding research into renal disease and raising public awareness of kidney health. Nephrology is the specialized branch of internal medicine focused on kidney function and renal disease management.

Rise of everyday wellness drinks
Electrolyte drinks were originally formulated as targeted medical and athletic treatments. They were designed to replace essential salts and fluids lost by athletes during prolonged, strenuous physical exercise, or by individuals suffering from illnesses involving severe vomiting or diarrhoea.
In recent years, however, the products have been aggressively marketed as everyday wellness essentials. Promoted as a routine way to enhance hydration and maintain optimal levels of vital minerals such as magnesium and potassium, electrolyte drinks are now widely available across the United Kingdom. Consumers can purchase them in almost every supermarket, corner shop, petrol station, and pharmacy as ready-mixed beverages, soluble tablets, or powder sachets.
Retail figures highlight the dramatic surge in consumer demand. Supermarket chain Waitrose reported a 171 per cent jump in website searches for electrolytes over the past year. Meanwhile, Tesco, the country's largest grocery retailer, has nearly quadrupled its range of electrolyte products over the same period.
Professor Davies questioned the commercial claims surrounding routine hydration products. "The marketing suggests we need these drinks for hydration," he said. "But we've managed to survive on the planet for a very long time without them. For most people, they are simply not necessary."
Hidden dangers for undiagnosed conditions
From a biological standpoint, electrolytes are minerals that carry a tiny electrical charge when dissolved in blood and other body fluids. They are vital for the proper functioning of cells in the muscles, heart, and brain, and they play a key role in helping the body absorb and retain water. In human physiology, sodium acts alongside potassium and chloride to balance fluid levels inside and outside cellular structures.
Despite these essential functions, Kidney Research UK reports that about seven million people in Britain are living with some level of chronic kidney disease. Alarmingly, an estimated five million of those individuals remain completely undiagnosed.
For people with existing renal impairment, drinking extra sodium is particularly problematic. Damaged kidneys are less effective at filtering and removing excess salt and fluid from the bloodstream. This fluid retention increases fluid volume inside blood vessels, driving arterial blood pressure higher. High blood pressure then inflicts further physical injury on the delicate filtration structures within the kidneys, reinforcing the self-perpetuating cycle described by medical specialists.

The situation is further complicated because high blood pressure typically produces no obvious symptoms while progressively damaging vital organs, earning it the reputation of a silent killer. About 14 million people in the UK suffer from high blood pressure.
Tracy Parker, nutrition lead at the British Heart Foundation, warned of the serious cardiovascular risks associated with unnecessary sodium intake. The British Heart Foundation is the primary charity funding cardiovascular and heart disease research across the UK.
"The high levels of sodium in some electrolyte products can raise blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and heart failure," Parker said. "In the UK, most of the salt we eat is already hidden in everyday foods, so adding more through supplements may do more harm than good."
When electrolyte drinks are actually needed
Health experts emphasize that electrolyte replacement drinks do serve a valid physiological purpose under specific circumstances. Professor Davies explained that serious physical exertion, such as running a marathon or engaging in high-intensity gym workouts, leads to substantial salt loss through sweat.
This rapid loss of sodium can trigger painful muscle cramps, dizziness, or fainting caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. Similarly, individuals recovering from acute illness with severe vomiting or bad diarrhoea experience significant electrolyte loss, making electrolyte drinks an appropriate recovery aid.
For most individuals conducting normal daily routines, plain water provides all the hydration necessary to maintain health. Furthermore, health experts note that essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium are far better acquired through a balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds rather than bottled supplements.
Professor Davies offered a clear final verdict on the daily use of commercial electrolyte products. "There is simply no argument for taking electrolyte drinks on a daily basis," he said.
"A lot of people slosh them back as a health enhancer, but there's no evidence they have any benefit to health at all," Professor Davies added. "The best you can say is that for most people these drinks won't do any harm, as long as they have good enough kidney function to deal with them."
