Emotionally guarded partners can show love, experts say

Psychologist Sabrina Romanoff and therapist Tatiana Rivera Cruz have identified key signs of emotional unavailability in relationships in guidance published by VeryWell Mind.

The experts explained that while emotionally guarded partners often alternate between affectionate and distant behavior, they can still form genuine bonds and demonstrate deep affection over time.

In clinical psychology, emotional unavailability refers to a defensive condition where a person struggles to handle emotional intimacy or form deep interpersonal connections. Relationships with such individuals often leave partners feeling caught in a bewildering emotional whirlwind.

Dr Romanoff, a doctor of psychology, told American digital publication VeryWell Mind that emotionally unavailable individuals tend to appear distant, cold, or remote. She noted that these individuals routinely struggle to communicate and express their inner feelings and emotions.

Therapist Tatiana Rivera Cruz and Dr Romanoff highlighted that people who are guarded in this manner frequently keep conversations strictly superficial. While they may comfortably discuss work or recreational hobbies, they carefully avoid topics that lead toward emotional openness and vulnerability.

Rivera Cruz explained that an emotionally unavailable partner will change the subject whenever discussions become too serious. She added that they often appear uncomfortable when a partner shares deep feelings, acting as if a wall protects their locked-away emotions.

Signs of Emotional Distance in Relationships

According to the specialists, emotionally unavailable partners typically alternate between hot and cold behaviors. A partner may show deep attentiveness on one day, only to erect a cold boundary the following day.

This unpredictable pattern makes it difficult to determine where a relationship is heading, primarily because an underlying fear of commitment drives the behavior. The experts noted it is common to hear such partners state that they are not ready for a serious relationship.

When interactions become overly intense or concrete, emotionally unavailable individuals tend to fall back on flirting, jokes, or physical affection to dodge serious subjects.

Rivera Cruz noted that as a consequence, these individuals frequently struggle to handle a partner's feelings and tend to pull away whenever emotional support or connection is needed.

How Guarded Partners Show Affection

Despite the challenges of dating an emotionally guarded person, both specialists emphasized that partners can find ways to demonstrate genuine affection while attempting to protect themselves.

The experts outlined several key indicators showing that an emotionally unavailable partner is developing true feelings:

  • They begin to open up and gradually share their vulnerabilities, even if such moments remain rare.
  • They make time for their partner and remember small personal details, such as an upcoming deadline or a favorite dessert.
  • They show genuine concern for their partner's well-being and offer spontaneous compliments.
  • They slowly introduce their partner into their close circle of friends and family.
  • They make a conscious effort to communicate and repair mistakes rather than dodging responsibility, despite their discomfort with emotions.

Setting Boundaries and Knowing When to Walk Away

Responding effectively to emotional unavailability requires self-awareness, clear boundaries, and deep reflection on emotional well-being, according to Rivera Cruz.

She explained that navigating such a relationship demands patience, realism, and vulnerability, but warned that individuals must also prepare themselves to walk away if necessary.

Cruz advised partners to evaluate whether they are willing to accept the ongoing dynamic, noting that an emotionally unavailable person may ultimately be unable to satisfy their emotional needs.

If a partner refuses or remains unable to address their emotional distance, Rivera Cruz recommended setting firm boundaries for self-protection, such as limiting emotional investment or ending the relationship entirely.
