A longer dishwasher cycle does not mean it uses more energy, according to European Union testing standards, which treat the eco program as the most efficient cycle for dishes with normal soiling.

The clock can be misleading. A three-hour cycle looks more expensive than a ninety-minute one, but duration only tells part of the story. Total energy use depends on how much power the machine draws at each stage, and heating water is typically one of the most electricity-intensive parts of a wash. Multiplying hours by the maximum power listed on the appliance's specification sheet gives a mistaken estimate.

The eco cycle exploits that relationship. It typically runs at a lower temperature and gives water and detergent more time to loosen everyday dirt. Less intense heating cuts consumption even though the pumps run for longer, within the conditions the manufacturer sets for that model. The program is designed for plates, glasses and cutlery with normal soiling, loaded according to the manual, and it still has to meet required cleaning and drying standards.



What the EU measures

Regulation (EU) 2019/2022 states that, for dishes with normal soiling, eco is the cycle most efficient in combined energy and water use. The rule requires that explanation to appear in the appliance instructions and uses the same cycle to check compliance. A connected dishwasher can add smartphone controls, but the EU reference point remains the standardized program.

Since March 1, 2021, household dishwashers sold in the European Union have had to offer a program labeled exclusively as eco. If the appliance selects a cycle automatically, eco must be the default; otherwise it must be available for direct selection. The A to G label uses that cycle to show energy use per 100 washes, water per wash, duration, capacity and noise, allowing different models to be compared on the same basis before purchase.

The label's values are obtained using the assigned capacity under standardized conditions. In a real kitchen, load size, maintenance, water hardness and how dishes are placed all make a difference. Smart appliances can adjust some phases, but actual consumption depends on use and can diverge from the figure on the label.

Temperature versus duration

The European Commission's impact assessment describes the usual mechanism: manufacturers lower the cleaning temperature and extend the cycle to achieve lower energy figures. The extra time compensates for less heat without lowering functional requirements. The same logic appears in other appliances, such as low-temperature washing machines, though each product applies its own cycles.

To get results closer to the label's figures, the guidance is to fill the dishwasher without overloading it, remove solid food residue, skip manual pre-rinsing, use the correct detergent dose and clean the filters. Efficient appliances lose part of their advantage with small or poorly distributed loads, because each cycle then serves less crockery using similar resources.

Pots with heavily stuck-on dirt, a particular hygiene need or a need to finish quickly can justify using another cycle listed in the manual. A quick-wash button prioritizes speed, while the label's consumption reference applies only to eco. In daily use, letting eco run its full course makes clear that the bill depends on the energy used, not on how many minutes the timer stays lit.
