Five breakfast foods boost brain health, dietitians say

Dietitians have recommended five breakfast foods to support brain health, memory, and concentration during the day, according to a report published by HEALTH magazine.

The recommended morning options include walnuts, blueberries, eggs, mushrooms, and avocados, each containing specific nutrients that influence mental performance and daily energy.

Walnuts were shown in research to improve cognitive performance in young adults. Studies indicated that young people who ate breakfast meals containing walnuts experienced faster reaction times and better memory scores across the day. Walnuts are edible tree nuts rich in healthy fats and antioxidant compounds that support neurological function.

Blueberries contain high levels of active compounds linked directly to cognitive support. A review of research found that children showed improved ability to memorize and recall information after eating the berries. Separate studies pointed to potential memory benefits for older adults experiencing mild cognitive impairment, a condition marked by memory loss beyond normal aging.

Nutrients in eggs and mushrooms

Eggs provide a concentrated source of choline, an essential nutrient involved in brain function and the creation of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for memory and learning processes. Beyond choline, eggs contain protein, lutein, docosahexaenoic acid, vitamins, and minerals. Research has linked egg consumption with improvements in specific memory metrics and mental processing speed.

Mushrooms can help support mood and lower mental fatigue, according to dietitian Maggie Moon. A small study observed these benefits in individuals who consumed a single serving of mushrooms equivalent to roughly one cup of fresh produce. Mushrooms are edible fungi that contain unique antioxidants and bioactive compounds.

Avocados and long term brain health

Avocados offer cognitive benefits through high levels of lutein, an antioxidant associated with brain health. In one clinical trial, older adults who consumed avocado daily over a six-month period showed measurable improvements in working memory, problem solving abilities, and sustained attention span.

Avocados also provide monounsaturated fats and dietary fiber, which experts say help maintain steady blood circulation and more consistent energy levels. Monounsaturated fats are heart healthy dietary fats that assist in maintaining proper vascular flow to vital organs including the brain.

The recommendations follow previous coverage by news outlet UNIAN detailing breakfast advice from seven doctors and dietitians, who emphasized that accessible daily foods can effectively support morning health. Scientists have also highlighted specific breakfast choices for adults over 50 years old to maintain optimal daily wellness.
