A court in Crimea has arrested a 64-year-old man in whose yard investigators found the buried body of a 12-year-old girl. Russia's Investigative Committee regional office told Lenta.ru that the arrest followed the opening of a criminal case against him.

He faces charges under Article 151 of the Russian Criminal Code, involving a minor in antisocial acts, and Article 109, causing death by negligence. Investigators believe he gave the schoolgirl a gas canister on August 7. She lost consciousness after inhaling its contents and later died.

Investigators said the man, fearing punishment, dragged the girl's body to his backyard and buried it in a pit, where police later found it. He is a former deputy and former director of a village cultural center.
During his detention, he resisted police and attempted to kill himself, according to earlier reports.
