Four local residents in the Republic of Dagestan will stand trial for kidnapping an acquaintance to extort a multi-million ruble ransom, state investigators announced. The regional branch of the Investigative Committee of Russia confirmed on its Telegram channel that the criminal case against the group has been sent to court.
According to investigators, the extortion plot began in February 2025 when one of the accused targeted a man whom he knew to have money. The suspect concocted a non-existent debt under a fabricated pretext and demanded repayment, threatening the victim with health problems and physical violence if he refused to comply.
When the victim initially failed to react to the threats, the suspect recruited three of his acquaintances to escalate the extortion. The four men abducted the victim and drove him to a secluded location, where they continued to demand money while threatening him with physical violence.
Fearing for his life, the victim concluded that the captors were capable of carrying out their threats and agreed to give them over 6.5 million rubles. The suspects then released him to allow him time to collect the required funds.
Rather than gathering the cash, the victim reported the incident to the police immediately after his release. Law enforcement officers moved quickly to detain all four members of the organized group.

The Investigative Committee stated that detectives have gathered a comprehensive collection of evidence confirming the criminal charges against the four defendants. Officers noted that the investigation successfully identified the precise role of each participant in the organized gang during the abduction and extortion.
All four suspects now face criminal proceedings in Dagestan after the completed investigative file was submitted for judicial review.
