France's Federation of Firefighters is calling for fire extinguishers to be made mandatory in all private vehicles, after a burning van near Biscarrosse triggered a wildfire that destroyed 3,600 hectares.
The van caught fire at the entrance to Biscarrosse on July 23, according to the report, setting off the blaze.
Current rules
Under current French regulations, only heavy trucks, buses, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, and agricultural or construction machinery are required to carry fire extinguishers.
The Federation of Firefighters considers these rules insufficient and wants them extended to cover all private cars, a measure the report notes is already in place in several other European countries.
