Giorgos Vagiannidis will start for Sporting Lisbon in their Portuguese league opener against Estrela Amadora alongside Ivan Fresneda, according to A Bola.
The defensive duo share a history in the Sporting Lisbon squad, having previously played together during comfortable victories at the Alvalade stadium as well as a heavy defeat in Norway.
Suspension opens room in defensive unit
The opportunity for Vagiannidis and Fresneda to reunite in the starting lineup comes as primary left back Maxi Araujo serves a suspension. Manager Rui Borges is unable to select Araujo for the opening fixture following the player's red card in the Portuguese Cup final.
