Google Pay has stopped working for contactless payments on smartphones running Chinese firmware, following the release of Google Play Services version 26.28, according to Notebookcheck.
The problem affects devices from Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus and other Chinese manufacturers that carry China-market firmware. Owners of global versions of the same devices, including those bought in China, have not reported the same issue.
Notebookcheck confirmed the fault on a Vivo X200 Ultra running a China ROM. After the Google Play Services update, contactless payment stopped working, even though bank cards continued to display normally inside the Google Wallet app with no error messages shown.
A developer on the XDA forum examined Google Play Services logs and found the system identifies the device as a “CN SKU” and then disables the Tap-and-Pay service responsible for NFC payments. The developer said this could indicate a deliberate restriction, but no official confirmation has been made.
Affected models reported by users include the Vivo X200 Ultra, X300 Pro, X300 Ultra, X100 Ultra, X Fold5, X Fold3 Pro, X200 Pro mini, Oppo Find N3, Oppo Find X9 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, among others. Complaints have come from China, Europe and Brazil.
Suggested workarounds include rolling back Google Play Services using ADB or switching to an alternative payment service such as Curve Pay. Google had not commented on the situation at the time of publication.
