Russian Tornado-S rocket launcher beats HIMARS, Rostec says

Russian state defense corporation Rostec claims its Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system holds key tactical advantages over American HIMARS launchers.

Russian Tornado-S rocket launcher beats HIMARS, Rostec says

The Russian Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system possesses significant tactical advantages over the American High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, state-owned defense corporation Rostec announced in a statement published on Telegram.

According to the state defense company, the secret behind the performance edge of the Russian weapon lies directly in the larger caliber of its launch tubes and the superior combat power of its rockets.

Rostec explained that these technical design features provide the domestic multiple launch rocket system with two major capabilities. Guided projectiles fired from the Tornado-S travel noticeably farther than those of rival systems, while its warheads deliver substantially greater explosive firepower upon impact.

The state corporation further highlighted the performance of the system in operational conditions. Officials from Rostec noted that guided munitions launched by the Tornado-S consistently demonstrate the ability to penetrate multi-tiered enemy air defense echelons.

Rostec is Russia's primary state defense conglomerate, responsible for overseeing research, development, and mass production across the country's military-industrial sector. Multiple launch rocket systems serve a crucial role in modern military tactics, firing salvoes of unguided or precision-guided rockets to saturate ground targets across wide areas.

Satellite integration and front-line strikes

The tactical capabilities of the Tornado-S have undergone continuous updates during recent military operations. In February, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Tornado-S units had been equipped with GLONASS satellite guidance equipment to enable higher precision strikes against defensive positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.

GLONASS is the Russian government's satellite-based radio navigation network, operating as the domestic equivalent to the United States Global Positioning System. Modern rocket systems like the American High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, commonly known as HIMARS, similarly rely on satellite targeting data to strike high-value fixed assets far behind active combat lines. The Kharkiv area in eastern Ukraine has remained a critical sector for long-range artillery engagements.

Evolving artillery systems and technical upgrades

Russian military commentators have also highlighted broader advancements across the country's artillery inventory. In August, RIA Novosti defense columnist Andrey Kots observed that another Russian rocket artillery platform, the Sarma multiple launch rocket system, demonstrated four specific operational advantages when evaluated against its predecessors.

Efforts to enhance rocket artillery range and warhead capacity reflect a broader shift toward long-range precision warfare. State defense manufacturers have prioritized upgrading guidance packages, expanding missile payload capacity, and improving deployment speed to maintain competitive firepower against Western military equipment.
