Greek National Defence Minister Nikos Dendias has presented his country's new anti-aircraft, anti-drone, and anti-ballistic defence dome to European Union counterparts at a meeting in Wicklow, near Dublin.
Speaking upon his arrival at the informal council of EU defence ministers, Dendias said that a contract for the Achilles Shield system was signed on Monday. He stated that the agreement establishes a defence production base and manufacturing capability on European soil specifically designed to address emerging aerial and technological threats.
The minister explained that Agenda 2030 and the Achilles Shield project represent the first holistic European effort to counter threats across multiple domains. He noted that in addition to discussions on Ukraine and the Middle East, the informal council would address security challenges stemming from space, cyberspace, ballistic missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles, adding that Greece has concrete experience to offer to the European dialogue.
Regional Security and Border Challenges
Dendias also stated his intention to brief fellow EU defence ministers on the security challenges caused by political revisionism in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea, and Thrace. He emphasized that revisionist behavior in these border areas poses a direct threat to the wider European region, European defence capabilities, and the safety of European citizens.
The informal gathering in Wicklow, located south of the Irish capital of Dublin, brings together defense leaders from across the 27 member states of the European Union. These informal council sessions allow ministers to align strategic defense objectives, share intelligence, and discuss emerging security challenges without taking formal legislative votes.
European Defence and Modernization
Greece forms the southeastern flank of the European Union, with Thrace and the Aegean islands representing outer European borders. The country has pursued comprehensive military modernization initiatives to upgrade its air defense networks and domestic defense production capabilities against evolving modern warfare technologies.
Dendias, a senior member of the Greek government who previously served as minister of foreign affairs, has consistently advocated for stronger pan-European security integration and joint defense projects among EU partner nations.
