International air arrivals in Greece reached 15.7 million during the first seven months of 2026, representing a 3.6 percent increase over the previous year.
According to data processed by the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises, foreign passenger arrivals increased by 541,000 travelers between January and July compared to the 15.16 million recorded in the same period of 2025.
The growth accelerated during the peak summer month of July, when Greek airports handled five million international arrivals. That figure marked a 3.2 percent rise from July 2025, which saw 4.86 million international air visitors, bringing an additional 155,000 travelers to the country.
July passenger surge starts key third quarter
The research body noted that the positive July performance provided an upward start to the third quarter of 2026. The third quarter is considered the most critical period for Greek tourism performance, as it encompasses the high-season months of July, August, and September.
The arrival statistics were compiled from data gathered across airports nationwide by the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises. The institute functions as the intelligence arm of the main industry association, monitoring passenger flows and sector trends to support hospitality planning.
Greek airport network and peak travel demand
Air travel remains the primary transport mode for overseas visitors entering Greece. The country's main aviation gateway is Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos, alongside regional hubs serving island destinations across the Aegean and Ionian seas, including Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Mykonos, and Santorini.
Tourism serves as a major driver of the Greek economy, contributing significantly to gross domestic product and supporting employment across accommodation, dining, transport, and retail businesses.
Seven-month growth trajectory
Across the principal Greek airports, international arrivals climbed to 15.7 million from 15.16 million in the corresponding seven-month period of 2025. The steady increase reflects sustained international demand for travel to Greece through the spring and early summer periods.
With July opening the high season on an upward trend, industry experts look to upcoming August and September passenger tallies to evaluate full third-quarter performance.
