Greek Shipowners Order 14 New Vessels for 2028 Delivery

Greek shipowners have linked themselves to 14 new vessel orders for tankers and gas carriers scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029.

Greek Shipowners Order 14 New Vessels for 2028 Delivery

Greek shipowners have expanded their presence in the international shipbuilding market by placing orders for 14 new vessels.

The contracts cover a mix of conventional crude oil tankers, liquefied natural gas carriers, and specialized ammonia transport vessels, according to the weekly Market Intelligence report published by shipbroking firm Weber Seas Hellas.

All 14 vessels linked to Greek maritime interests are scheduled for delivery across 2028 and 2029. The surge in shipbuilding activity reflects ongoing capital investment by Greek shipping companies into energy transport fleets.

Freight Rates and Tanker Demand

The new shipbuilding commitments come as freight rates for Very Large Crude Carriers on the key shipping route between the Middle East and China surged past 1 million dollars per day.

Very Large Crude Carriers, commonly known in the maritime industry as VLCCs, are supertankers designed to move bulk shipments of unrefined petroleum. These giant vessels can typically carry around two million barrels of crude oil per voyage.

The Middle East to China maritime corridor is one of the busiest energy supply lines in the world. Tankers operating on this route carry crude oil from Persian Gulf export terminals to major refineries across East Asia.

Fleet Investments and Energy Transport

The orders highlighted by Weber Seas Hellas demonstrate investment across both traditional fossil fuel transport and newer gas shipping technologies. Alongside conventional oil tankers, Greek owners are funding new builds for liquefied natural gas and liquid ammonia movement.

Liquefied natural gas carriers transport natural gas that has been cooled to minus 162 degrees Celsius, converting the gas into a liquid state for efficient ocean transit. Ammonia transport vessels carry liquid ammonia, a chemical compound used in industrial manufacturing and agriculture that is also being adopted as an alternative low-carbon marine fuel.

Weber Seas Hellas is a maritime brokerage and intelligence firm headquartered in Greece that monitors global vessel transactions, chartering markets, and shipyard orders.

Delivery Timeline and Market Outlook

The 14 contracted vessels will join the global fleet when shipyards complete construction in 2028 and 2029. Shipyards often operate on multi-year delivery lead times due to heavy order backlogs across global shipbuilding hubs.

Greece remains the world's largest shipowning nation by deadweight tonnage, with Greek maritime companies controlling a substantial portion of the global tanker and gas carrier fleets.
