Guayaquil Unveils Film, Theater, Music Lineup Sept 6-13

Guayaquil residents have a full slate of cultural options this week, running from September 6 to September 13, with a new film release, a comedy play, a Cuban music night and a free opera talk all on offer around the city.

The film "Yo, Narciso," directed by and starring Argentine actor Adrian Suar, opened in Ecuadorian theaters after premiering last Thursday. The movie tells the story of a sociology professor who approaches a plastic surgeon with the intention of studying him as a case of narcissism, only for the academic exercise to turn into a relationship built on seduction, secrets and contradictions.

Yo, Narciso hits theaters

The lead character, Rocio Flores, is played by singer and actress Natalia Oreiro. She portrays a teacher and researcher writing a book on narcissistic behavior who fixes her attention on Maximo Rey, a well known plastic surgeon played by Suar, whose self-centered personality appears to match the traits she wants to study. The film explores what happens when studying another person becomes a way of understanding oneself.

Cuban son night in Las Peñas

Cuban music will fill the historic Las Peñas neighborhood of Guayaquil with "Una noche de son cubano," or A Night of Cuban Son, an event tracing the history of one of the island's most iconic musical genres.

The show is set for Friday, September 11, at 10 p.m. at Casa Cino Fabiani, located at Numa Pompilio Llona 196. The evening will revisit songs by performers such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo and Compay Segundo, among other son musicians. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at the venue.

Free talk on Rossini's opera

The Centro de Arte Theater is presenting a new session of its "Grandes de la opera," or Great Names of Opera, talks, an initiative aimed at exploring masterworks of the global operatic repertoire. This edition is devoted to "La donna del lago," a composition by Gioacchino Rossini, with the discussion led by conductor Freddy Torres.

The opera premiered in 1819 and is based on the narrative poem by Sir Walter Scott. It is regarded as a key work in the transition toward romanticism in Italian opera. The talk will take place on September 9 at 7 p.m., with free admission.
