Heroboard Pilates grows as a portable Reformer alternative

Heroboard Pilates is gaining popularity on social media and in studios as a new alternative to traditional body-sculpting disciplines like Pilates Reformer and Lagree. The practice relies on the Heroboard, a portable wheeled board that weighs between four and five kilograms and measures about 50 centimeters in length.

Donald McIntyre designed the board in 2020 to make Pilates more accessible than the larger Reformer machine. The device costs nearly 240 euros, or 280 dollars, and can be used at home, in a gym, or outdoors.

Design and exercise demands

According to the Heroboard fitness website, the equipment allows users to work on muscle strengthening, mobility, and flexibility while offering the same sensations as a Reformer. The discipline is designed to be playful while targeting deep muscles, coordination, and balance.

Because the board moves during workouts and has no springs, it provides no machine support and is harder to stabilize than a classic Reformer. The body must constantly adapt to maintain balance, requiring muscles to pull the board back to a neutral position during every exercise.

The equipment is intended for Pilates exercises, low-impact strength training, mobility work, rehabilitation movements, stretching, and muscle strengthening.
