Iga Świątek discovers potential Cincinnati WTA opponents

Iga Świątek and Maja Chwalińska will start the WTA tournament in Cincinnati in the second round after discovering their potential opponents in the draw. First-round main draw matches begin on Thursday, August 13, while qualifying is already underway.

Świątek will face either Venus Williams or a qualifier in the second round. If she plays Williams, it will be their first match on court. Świątek is defending her title in Cincinnati, having defeated Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 in last year's final. She is currently fighting for a place in the Toronto final against Elina Svitolina.

Second-round matches for Polish players

Chwalińska will face either Panna Udvardy or Cristina Bucsa. Against the Hungarian player Udvardy, Chwalińska has one win and two losses in three matches, though Chwalińska won their last meeting 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in 2024. Against Bucsa, Chwalińska has lost both previous matches, including a 7-5, 6-0 loss to the Spaniard a year ago in Madrid.

Chwalińska enters Cincinnati after losing her first match in Toronto 5-7, 1-6 to Talia Gibson, as she continues searching for her first win since Roland Garros. Two other Polish players begin play in the first round in Cincinnati. Magdalena Fręch will play Antonia Ružić, and Magda Linette will face Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
