FIFA president Gianni Infantino sought an annual salary of $30 million, plus additional bonuses, through a now-abandoned plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private entities, according to sources cited by Martyn Ziegler of The Times.
Infantino has since withdrawn the project, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, but the revelations appear to have deepened his political isolation. Ziegler reported that the most powerful football confederations are now moving against him following the collapse of the scheme.
UEFA had earlier condemned the privatisation proposal in an official statement, saying that no one has the moral right to sell what is held in trust for future generations.
Former Polish Football Association president Zbigniew Boniek said Infantino appeared to have gone too far, adding that he hoped football would ultimately prevail.
Ishaan Bhattacharya of HITC wrote that had the plan succeeded, it would have been difficult to imagine Infantino ever relinquishing power at FIFA.
