Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned on Sunday that the "unprecedented economic war" the United States is preparing against Tehran, through even tougher sanctions, will end up damaging the United States itself. He shared a cartoon on X depicting what he called the "Iranian boomerang."
The warning followed an announcement last Wednesday by US President Donald Trump that he intends to dramatically increase economic pressure on Tehran. Trump threatened any country that provides "support" of any kind to the Iranian economy, without giving further specifics.
Sanctions Details Expected
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was expected to brief reporters later the same day on the measures, which he described as "the harshest sanctions in history," according to the Athens News Agency, citing dpa.
Iranian state media appeared unmoved by the American threats. The Tasnim news agency noted that the United States has spent years trying to suffocate Iran's economy by cutting off its financial ties with the rest of the world, but said the country had "learned to bypass" US restrictions and was "very capable" of doing so.
Foreign Minister and Security Chief Respond
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the economic war had been waged against his country by the United States for years as part of its intimidation tactics, but that the Islamic Republic had learned how to handle it.
Despite Iran's sophisticated sanctions-evasion network, its economic growth has come under increasing strain in recent years, and citizens have faced a sharp rise in inflation in recent months.
Mohsen Rezaei, the newly appointed head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned on state television that oil-exporting countries in the region should not take part in the American economic war. He said any country that did would be treated as an enemy and would not be allowed to send a single drop of oil through the Gulf.
