Islam Makhachev Defends UFC Title Against Ian Garry

Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion Islam Makhachev will make his first title defense against Irish contender Ian Machado Garry in the main event of UFC 330 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

The championship bout headlines the card on the night leading into Sunday, August 16, marking the Russian fighter's first defense of the 77-kilogram belt he captured from Jack Della Maddalena in November 2025.

The event schedule begins with early preliminary fights at midnight Moscow time, followed by the preliminary card at 2:00 a.m. and the main card at 4:00 a.m. Russian viewers can watch the broadcast on Match TV, Match! Boets, and UFC Fight Pass, with the main event walkouts expected toward morning depending on earlier fight durations.

Makhachev claimed the welterweight crown in his division debut after stepping up from lightweight, where he established himself among the most dominant champions in mixed martial arts history. He ended Della Maddalena's eight-fight UFC winning streak by unanimous decision over five rounds, controlling the Australian contender with clinch work and wrestling control.

Garry enters his first UFC title fight holding a professional record of 17 wins and one loss. The Irishman suffered his sole career defeat against Kazakh contender Shavkat Rakhmonov in December 2024, but subsequently bounced back with consecutive victories over Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad.

Event details and fighter conditioning

Prior to Makhachev's move to 77 kilograms, analysts questioned whether his physical stature would translate to the higher weight class. Makhachev consistently overwhelmed lighter opponents at 70 kilograms, but face-offs against natural welterweights raised questions about his ability to manage larger frames.

Makhachev addressed those concerns after neutralizing Della Maddalena across 25 minutes, asserting that his body has fully adapted to the division. He explained that his current training camp felt significantly smoother because he was no longer forcing mass gain, noting that his weight has stabilized and that he considers himself a true welterweight.

The physical contrast remains pronounced against Garry, who stands 191 centimeters tall compared to Makhachev's 178 centimeters and possesses a distinct reach advantage. To avoid absorbing long-range jabs and kicks over five rounds, the champion must close distance, initiate takedowns, and pressure his larger opponent on the mat.

Despite winning his title by decision, Makhachev expressed dissatisfaction with his cautious approach against Della Maddalena. He stated that his primary focus in that bout was securing the championship in a new weight division, but promised a more aggressive approach against Garry to seek an early finish, adding that he expects an opportunity to end the fight following his first successful takedown.

Makhachev holds a 16-fight winning streak in the UFC and has shown notable evolution in his striking. He previously knocked out former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and engaged in extended standing exchanges with veteran boxer Dustin Poirier. Makhachev said the feeling of being in peak shape as the world's top fighter is unmatched outside of sports, reiterating his goal to break records and continue competing for several more years.

Technical matchups and training adjustments

Garry presents a specialized striking style based on distance control, constant lateral movement, and precise jab-kick combinations. Rather than engaging in heavy exchanges, the Dublin native uses entries and exits to outscore opponents while avoiding counterattacks.

To prepare for elite grapplers, Garry has built extensive grappling credentials over several years. He earned a judo black belt by age 18 and spent time training at Kill Cliff FC in the United States and Chute Boxe in Brazil, the home gym of former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira. In 2026, Garry traveled to Georgia to train directly with Olympic medalists in wrestling and judo specifically to counter Makhachev's submission threat.

Analysts emphasize that Garry's movement poses a tactical puzzle for Makhachev. If the champion mistimes his takedown entries, he risks exposing himself to knee strikes, front kicks, or straight counterpunches from the taller fighter.

Betting odds and fighter predictions

Bookmakers list Makhachev as a heavy favorite to retain his championship. Odds on a victory for the Russian range between 1.19 and 1.26, while odds on a Garry upset range from 3.80 to 5.00.

Former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov cautioned that the fight will not be simple. Nurmagomedov described Garry as stylistically awkward due to his height, reach, and preference for striking from range, stating that Makhachev must pursue the contender, close distance, and take him down.

Former two-division champion Daniel Cormier highlighted Garry as the toughest test for Makhachev in the division, praising his striking accuracy and takedown defense. Former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya also warned against discounting the challenger, citing Garry's competitive grappling performance against Rakhmonov.

Conversely, contender Arman Tsarukyan predicted Makhachev will time his entries effectively to secure a submission victory in the third or fourth round. Volkanovski described Makhachev as a well-rounded fighter capable of adjusting to any style, while Poirier predicted a decision victory for the champion.

Makhachev's longtime coach Javier Mendez stated that Garry does not present any elements the champion has not encountered previously, expressing confidence that Makhachev will control the tempo of the fight.

Fight strategies and outcome scenarios

For Garry, success depends on maintaining distance, neutralizing takedowns, and keeping the contest standing over five rounds. If he prevents ground control, he can test Makhachev's patience across 25 minutes.

For Makhachev, the objective centers on closing range without absorbing damage, securing early takedowns, and enforcing his wrestling dominance. If Makhachev establishes ground position early, the fight is likely to align with betting expectations; otherwise, Garry will have the opportunity to contest the title on his terms.
