A 35-year-old Israeli national has been arrested for causing a wildfire with a barbecue in southern Rethymno on the Greek island of Crete. Fire Service investigative officers arrested the man on August 15, 2026, following a rapid inquiry into the blaze.
The fire broke out around 7:11 pm on August 14, 2026, in the Finikas Municipal Unit within the Municipality of Agios Vasileios. Strong Fire Service forces battled the flames for four hours before bringing the blaze under control after it threatened to expand across the region.
Investigators determined that the suspect caused the fire through negligence while operating a grill. At the time of the incident, authorities had placed the region under Category Risk 4, which indicates a very high fire danger. The suspect was detained under in-flagrante summary procedures for arson by negligence and will be referred to the court system.
Surge in wildfire enforcement
The arrest comes amid a broader enforcement campaign against fire safety violations across Greece. Official figures show that between January 1 and August 15, 2026, fire authorities issued 716 administrative fines totaling 1,136,593.21 euros for safety breaches.
During the same period, officers carried out 297 arrests under summary in-flagrante legal procedures. Negligence accounted for the vast majority of cases, resulting in 267 arrests or 89.90 percent, while intentional arson led to 30 arrests or 10.10 percent.

Greece's Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes and Fire Service investigative units maintain high operational readiness. Officials said specialized teams are conducting intensive inspections and taking immediate action to hold violators accountable.
The Fire Service reminded the public that human negligence causes most wildfires in the country. Authorities warned that complying with fire prevention rules and avoiding work that generates sparks or ignition are essential to protect human lives, the environment, and property.
