Israel's designated ambassador to Greece, Pninat Yannai, has highlighted bilateral relations between the two countries by sharing social media video clips from her family holiday on the island of Mykonos.
The diplomat posted footage featuring a yacht on turquoise waters, traditional Greek cuisine, dancing in a tavern, and plate smashing, describing the moments as part of a personal approach to international relations.
Mykonos, located in the Cyclades island group in the Aegean Sea, is one of Greece's primary holiday destinations. Greece and Israel have expanded their diplomatic, economic, and tourism ties in recent years, with travel serving as a major bridge between the two Eastern Mediterranean nations.
Yannai noted that diplomacy sometimes begins around a table, on a boat, or even with the breaking of plates in a Greek tavern.
She revealed that nearly 30 members of her extended family spent their summer vacation in Mykonos, enjoying the sea, local scenery, and regional dishes.
Her 82-year-old father, a former school principal who is usually a serious person, was swept up in the island atmosphere and joined his children and grandchildren on the dance floor. Yannai commented that his reaction perhaps reflected the magic of Greece.
Israeli tourist numbers and diplomatic goals
Yannai emphasized that Israelis do not merely visit Greece as tourists but fall in love with its people, warmth, culture, food, islands, and unique lifestyle.
She cited official tourism statistics showing that Greece welcomed 743,841 visitors from Israel in 2023. The total set a record for Israeli arrivals in the country, marking an increase of nearly 20 percent compared to the previous year.
As Israel's designated ambassador to Greece, Yannai said she feels a specific responsibility to help further develop relations between the two countries.
Her main objectives include encouraging more Israelis to explore Greece, strengthening two-way tourism, and bringing the two nations closer together.
Yannai added that tourism involves far more than flights, hotel bookings, and attractive destinations, describing it as a process of people meeting people, building friendships, and embracing each other's cultures.
